One and a half weeks to go....!

Time is ticking along verrrrrrrryyyyyy slowly!

Here's the question of the day! Open-toed shoes or close toed? Singapore will be around 35 degrees, Calcutta around 28...and Darjeeling, a chilly 12! Also, Calcutta will, no doubt, have all sorts of creepy crawlies ready to take a nip out of an innocent big toe - not to mention all manner of grimy substances, oily patches, etc....which hang around on the average Calcutta street. Then again, a pair of Tevas might be very useful while hanging around Singapore and at the Indian hotels...hmmmm.... I'm thinking one pair of comfortable black shoes to wear onto the plane, plus a pair each of Tevas & runners. Amber...one can only guess - will update this thread when I discover the evil truth!

Off to see Simran the travel agent today. Amber refers to him as the slow-motion Sikh-model travel agent - and, come to think of it, he does have the bearing of certain rain-forest dwelling, doe-eyed sloths. He's quite slow - but very thorough! I'm really hoping that he's not pulling my leg that our travel visas are ready. It's got to be my 4th trip out there - and I'm sure Amber has had two or three as well. You'd think they be more authentic - we've not been offered a single cup of chai yet!

I've now discovered that my best-laid plans of acquiring a travel surge protector for the laptop have gone seriously awry! Turns out I've got one that only works up to 120 volts...and...uhh....everything in the East runs on 220! Guess I'll be picking one up in Singapore!

This is getting all very exciting - even the smallest development results in Amber and I breaking out into "hoorays". Today, for example, Fr. van Walleghem (the rector at North Point) emailed me to tell me there were copious numbers of bank machines scattered around Darjeeling. Inevitably...there were "hoorays" all round....
