KanjiQuiz is the followup to KanaQuiz. KanjiQuiz is intended to help with the memorization of kanji, which are the ideographic characters in the Japanese writing system that were imported from China. Each kanji, unlike kana, represents an idea, in this way, they are more analogous to words than letters.
KanjiQuiz uses the EDICT and KANJIDIC files. These files are the property of the Electronic Dictionary
Research and Development Group at Monash University, and are used in
conformance with the Group’s licence.
Quiz Mode
In the above figure, the main KanjiQuiz window is displayed in quiz mode. You are shown a single kanji in the upper left section. You can then guess what the meaning of that character is be clicking on of the four large buttons in the bottom of the window.
List Mode
While in list mode, you are shown a list of all the loaded kanji. (You can control which kanji are loaded by going to the Preferences… menu item). Typing text in the field labeled “Filter:” will filter the list so that only items containing that text are shown.
Preferences

In this panel, you can select the groups of kanji on which you wish to be tested. The groups of kanji are as follows:
- Grade 1 Kanji — These are kanji taught to Japanese students in grade one.
- Grade 2 Kanji — These are kanji taught to Japanese students in grade two.
- Grade 3 Kanji — These are kanji taught to Japanese students in grade three.
- Grade 4 Kanji — These are kanji taught to Japanese students in grade four.
- Grade 5 Kanji — These are kanji taught to Japanese students in grade five.
- Grade 6 Kanji — These are kanji taught to Japanese students in grade six.
- General Use Kanji — These are commonly used kanji that are not taught in elementry school.
- Name Kanji — These are kanji that aren't frequently used, except in people's names.
- Other Kanji — These are kanji that don't fit in any of the above categories.
When in Quiz mode, you will only be tested on the kanji in the groups selected here. Likewise, when in list mode, only the kanji in the groups selected here will be shown in the list.
If the “Show Readings” button is checked, then, in Quiz mode, you will be shown the reading(s) of the displayed kanji.
