Dixie Chicks
Cathi's aunt Sandi called this afternoon to offer us 4
tickets to tonight's Dixie Chicks concert in San Antonio. We called everyone we
knew who might be interested in going, the Husers, Bubba & Linda, and Ronnie
& Diann, but it ended up being just the two of us. We considered taking the
boys but Joshua said he didn't really want to go anyway. Instead, we dropped
them off to spend the night at Grandma's
house.
The concert was a near sellout.
After waiting in line for 20 minutes or so, we finally approached the security
checkpoint. Just as they asked us to empty our pockets I remembered the small
pocketknife I was carrying. I showed it to the security guard who told me "I
didn't see anything" and suggested that I hold the knife in my hand while the
other security guard checked me with the "wand." I was a little nervous about
intentionally concealing a weapon, however small, but they waved me right on
through.
As Cathi and I approached our
seats I was annoyed by a guy in a Cowboy hat who seemed hesitant to let us to
pass. After the opening set by Michelle Branch, Cathi and I decided to take a
bathroom break. I stood up and approached the guy in the Cowboy hat who didn't
seem inclined to move. Finally, I said "Excuse me sir!" and he slowly and
deliberately rose up to let me by. Once we were outside the stadium I commented
to Cathi about the jerk in the Cowboy hat. "I think he may be mentally
handicapped" she said. "I noticed his wife had to tell him to what to do." Back
at our seats, I took a closer look and, as near as I could tell, the man in the
Cowboy hat was blind, and it was I who was the jerk. Sure enough, he ended up
leaving the concert early with his wife leading him down the steep stairwell by
the hand.
The Dixie Chicks concert itself
was great. I was surprised by the size of their stage production (animated
walkways, pneumatic stages, and giant viewscreens). At one point they dropped
leafy backlit curtains down around the stage making it look like they were
singing beneath a giant tree. It seemed more like the show you might see for a
rock band. Cathi and I thought the SBC Center was at about 90% capacity so it
looks like the Chicks still have plenty of fans in central Texas.
The trip home was uneventful with the
exception of a car that ran off the road in front of us, then veered,
fishtailing back onto the highway and continued on like nothing had
happened.
