Lots of Free Time
With Little League finally out of our lives, the boys
and I had time to mow Grandma's yard this afternoon. It was getting pretty
overgrown from the recent rains. While Josh and Zach rode the riding mower, I
filled in a hole and removed dead branches and old pipes that were obstacles to
mowing. After much begging, I finally
stopped at a fireworks stand on our way back from Walmart this evening. I was
surprised when Joshua was the only one who made a purchase. Zach said "I'm not
going to waste my money." Look out for the apocalypse.

Beeville Little League boys got things started in their postseason play with a
tough 6-5 victory over Orange Grove on Friday night in Tuleta.
The contest was all
square at 1-1 through three full innings. The Beeville stars threatened in the
first by getting the bases loaded with only one out but OG hurler Jose Martinez
got the final two outs of the inning on strikeouts to end the uprising. The
Orange Grove squad got a single run in its half of the first but the lead did
not last long as the Beeville stars came back in the top of the second. A
one-out walk to Alex Longoria got things going for Beeville. Ryan Ramirez then
came through with a two-out RBI single to plate Longoria with Beeville’s
first run of the game to tie it at 1-1.
The game settled into a
pitcher’s duel with Beeville hurler Ted Christenson and Orange
Grove’s Martinez keeping the batters off stride. Martinez started the top
of the fourth with a strikeout but then issued four straight walks to push one
run across for Beeville. An error on a slow roller past the mound by Rosendo
Garcia got another run and then a two-run single to center by Bryant Holmes got
the Beeville stars two more runs to move out to a 5-1 lead over OG. The home
team got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth as an error and a
couple of walks allowed Martinez to score. Through four innings, the Beeville
stars were in front 5-2.
Beeville got what turned
out to be the winning run in the top of the fifth. An error by the Orange Grove
third baseman allowed Christenson to reach first base. A wild pitch moved him
down to second. A two-out single to right center by Travis Almeida brought
Christenson home with Beeville’s sixth run of the contest. Orange Grove
used a two-out rally to get back into the contest in the bottom of the fifth. An
infield single, followed by a single to right that was bobbled by the Beeville
right fielder produced one run for Orange Grove to make it 6-3. Three straight
walks and a couple of wild pitches brought two more OG players across the plate
before Christenson settled down and got the final out on a strikeout. The score
entering the final frame was 6-5 with Beeville hanging on to the slim lead.
Martinez put the Beeville
stars down in order in the top of the sixth to hold on to their momentum.
Christenson struggled in the
fifth with his control and was relieved on the mound in the sixth by Zach
Petrus. The right hander got the first two outs in quick fashion on a comebacker
to the mound and a fly to center. Petrus hit the third batter of the inning and
then gave up a single to Martinez to put runners at first and second for Orange
Grove. A wild pitch by Petrus moved the runners into scoring position at third
and second. OG need just one run to push the game into extra innings but Petrus
earned the save by getting a third strike swinging on the next batter to end the
game with Beeville still out front 6-5.
The double
elimination tournament continued over the weekend and into this week. Scores and
details on the other contests involving the Beeville stars will be published
when made available.
