SIP Slides

I'll be giving a small talk to some of the folks at Academic Technologies regarding the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). For your viewing pleasure, I've placed PDF and PowerPoint renderings of the Keynote presentation. PowerPoint (3.5 MB), PDF (448 KB) I use some of the docs at Columbia's CS dept. to illustrate how the Java SIP library is used.

Shootout in the RSS Corral

David Donald just sent me a link to another MacOS X RSS feed reader, Shrook. I've been a die-hard NetNewsWire Lite user for some months now, so it's interesting to see how the two clients differ. Continue...

Java and SIP

If you're interested in writing SIP software using Java, I have found this site to be particularly handy. (Based out of Columbia University)

Another Reason to Love Macs

I just received a PowerMac G4 yesterday. While moving files and programs over from my PowerBook, I discovered a really cool thing -- Firewire target disk mode. Continue...

Useful Java Media Code

The following Java code is an example of some of the functionality we use within Oyez to determine whether a specific case has audio, rtspResourceExists (). I've also thrown in the code we use to calculate SHA hashes of the MP3 files as part of our collaboration with Creative Commons where we use their license metadata embedding methods.

Java IDE

If you write Java code and have yet to check out Eclipse, quit reading already and take a look at this great Java-based IDE. I started using it last year after getting frustrated with my years-long process of vi, javac, java, Ctrl-C, vi... Its features such as JAR file export and function auto-completion improve Java productivity immensely.

Woohoo

I just found out that I received an A on my midterm exam! Let's see if I can repeat the experience tonight and ace the final. The course is "Public Opinion and Voting Behavior".

New Blogs

I've put up two new blogs recently. The first is feddersen.net, Tim Feddersen's personal weblog. I have also repurposed my old aetherial.net domain to serve as a technical blog of sorts. Visit both while I wait for the PowerMac to arrive this afternoon.

Below is some code used to generate image galleries in Oyez. I apologize if it's a bit curt, but I lost the first revision with a browser crash so my patience is at about half. Still, this may be of some use. Continue...

Oyez Tech Overview Slides

I have posted the slides of a presentation that I gave to the Spoken Word collaborators in March. The slides are available as PowerPoint (3.3 MB) and PDF (1.4 MB). They describe how Oyez uses Cocoon, MySQL, RSS, and other technologies in it's current (2003-07-30) implementation. I can make the original Keynote file available on request.

Brian Kernighan Interview

Linux Journal is currently running an interview with my former senior thesis advisor Brian Kernighan. If you're a CS student reading this from Princeton, this guy is the one to get as any sort of advisor. His Zen pragmatism is infectious and you'll learn a lot.

Intro

Hello and welcome to my technical blog. I also run a personal blog at http://aetherial.nu, but since I had a domain sitting around stagnant, I figured that I would set up a place to jot down technical tidbits I find, invent, or miss from day to day. Continue...

Almost there.

I will be receiving the 17" Cinema Display today. Tomorrow, I will finally have my PowerMac G4 with all the trimmings. I visited Holly yesterday and took a look at the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue for iBooks. The iBook would be the replacement for the portable part of my current PowerBook setup. Continue...

Stupid California Democrats

Gray Davis to fight for office. Prediction #1: he will waste a lot of resources in order to stay in power -- resources that the Dems will need in 2004. Prediction #2: he will lose. Prediction #3: centrist Dems will be pissed that he wasted so much money and time and allowed a Republican to take the California governorship. Prediction 4: Democrats, California ones in particular, will look like their heads are still firmly up their collective rectums. Davis, do your party a favor and resign -- keep the governor's seat in the Democratic Party, and save everyone a lot of grief in the process. Moron.

Tick, Tock. Tick, Tock.

Another slow day at the office. I've not heard back from the SCOTUS photographer yet, nor have the Xdrive folks gotten back to me regarding them mirroring the Oyez audio. On the other hand, Oyez has moved fifty gigabytes of audio today. Not bad... Continue...

It's a cool 32 degrees across the river Styx today.

I can't believe that I'm doing this, but I'm applying for a volunteer position on Democrats WatchBlog and its third party counterpart. My reasons are that I want Bush out of the White House, yet the Democrats (candidates and pundits alike) can't seem to pull their heads out of their asses. (Example) I've posted the details of my application below. Continue...

Whoops, I Did It Again

I left work early today to get some jetlag rest and talk to a bank rep about whether it would make sense for me to get a loan for the PowerMac G4 purchase, of if I should use my existing line of credit. The loan didn't make much sense given my other options, so I ended up purchasing the PowerMac tonight. Luckily, this purchase will be partially financed by the sale of my 15" PowerBook and its accessories. Continue...

We're Back

Aetherial.Nu is back online. I rebooted the server when I got back and things are back to normal. The most obvious culprit may be a DNS server gone haywire. I'll be posting my images and entries soon.

Scotland Entry: Much Later than I Would Have Liked

I was hoping to post more entries of my trip to Scotland, but my server died sometime earlier in the week. I cannot ping the machine, which may be a positive thing since computers tend to remain ping-able after disk failures. I'm hoping that the system got caught in some soft of tight kernel loop or something like that. Anyways... Continue...

David's Garden

These are a few images of David's (my host) garden at the back of the house. It's a great little yard, having been terraced at about three levels. The top level has some grass and a table, the middle has some pretty flowers, and the bottom level leads to the kitchen. An interesting thing is that he uses strawberries to fill the spaces where there is nothing yet. Apparently they grow like weeds in Scotland.

It's lucky 7/11. Go wish Barbara a happy birthday. She really likes wishes in the form of gifts. :-) Get her a DVD with John Cusack's sidekick (Jeremy Piven, I think), since she has a crush on the guy. Perhaps a copy of "Old School"?
