Zeno's Paradox
March 09, 2004 - Stale Internet

I've been working on getting a Flash-based Project Pad applet working that will allow our Spoken Word collaborators to better search the BBC catalog and collect records for teachers. I'll code a bit, and surf a bit. I've been making progress working, but my surfing has been disappointing lately. I hereby declare the The Internet to be Dead and Uninteresting at the moment.

At the moment, I cannot think of any sites that I am drawn to anymore for news or entertainment. I have a decent list set up in NetNewsWire, and I check those religiously, but that action is more a result of having little else to do online. In a previous life, I spent lots of time at sites like Slashdot, Kuro5hin, and Metafilter and was pretty entertained. However, nowadays, I visit those sites and I am simply bored.

This effect has also extended to political websites and blogs online. Not six months ago, I'd spend a decent amount of time reading Daily Kos, Watchblog, and others. However, since the 2004 election is Bush v. Kerry, and I already know who I'll support and there are not any other races that have caught my attention. Thus interest in political blogs is approaching zero as election day approaches.

I figured that I'd try some new things like Flash games. I tried out a version of Missile Commander and was still bored. Furthermore, software and hardware review sites and traditional things like webcomics don't hold my interest any more. I feel like I've crossed that threshold where everything has gone from new and shiny to old and worn. Things on the Internet are now lucky if they can even prod an unenthusiastic "eh" out of me.

I think that somewhere in my mind, I killed the Internet. Somehow, its mystery and soul have been sucked out of it, leaving a grey and chaotic place where things are happening, but I can't bring myself to give a damn. RIP.
