Zeno's Paradox
October 25, 2003 - Panther and WAN Update

Well, I managed to get Holly set up with a WLAN. I ended up purchasing a Linksys 802.11b router that hooks directly up to the DSL line and is the access point for the network. It worked fairly well and if my AP is any indication, I can expect few problems in the future.

I've finally managed to get Panther installed on my home machine and play with it a bit. I really haven't done too much with Panther -- rather my time has been spent trying to figure out the best way to use Retrospect to backup my files. The problem is thus -- I have about one gigabyte of documents and settings, thirty-five gigabytes of MP3 and other audio files, and about twenty gigabytes of DV footage. These have varying levels of importance when being backed up.

I'm fairly impressed with Retrospect. At the moment, I'm still learning the program, having been initially overwhelmed by the number of options. I'm currently backing up the documents mentioned above to my Linux box as a test. I suppose I may do the same with the music files tomorrow, and I have no idea what will become of the DV footage. I wish I could simply back it all up on a DVD or two, but the price/density ratio is not really all that compelling at this moment. An alternative solution would be to purchase a FireWire enclosure and use that as a dedicated backup for files. The problem there is that is also expensive at this point, as I would want a 160 GB drive at the least. I could purchase another IDE disk to throw into either the Linux box or the OS X box, but this is not that great of a backup option as it would remain on site.

My next trick is to see if I have printer drivers to install. I'm hoping that I can avoid all the HP All-In-One crap...
