Zeno's Paradox
December 08, 2003 - My Memory Sucks

My memory really sucks. I have posted to several places where I discuss voting Bush out of the office, and I have started things like this, "I voted for Bush over Gore in 2000, but now I want him out." That statement is incorrect, as I had forgotten that my 2000 presidential vote went to the Libertarian candidate instead. Woohoo! I didn't vote for Bush. This is such a weight off my shoulders. Though I don't know if my LP vote did squat. How can someone forget who they voted for?

So, here's the scoop. K5 has an article about Nader considering a presidential run. Someone brought up the LP (Libertarian Party) and I thought, "Why didn't I vote LP?" Then I remembered that I did and I regretted it after 9/11 given Harry Brown's comments after the attack. I remember being ashamed that I voted for him after the remarks he made. (I can't remember what they were any more.)

In any case, this is a relief as I can honestly claim that I didn't do anything to help Bush into office. (Though I was rooting for him to beat Gore.)

As for helping Bush or not, it will depend upon the state you voted in. I vote strategically, meaning if the election isn't close in my state I'll vote any handy third party (Perot once, Nader once). If the polls are close, then of course I'll vote the lesser of evil.

What we really need is electoral reform so we can safely vote our hearts. Instant Runoff voting (IRV) is the most popular right now but others like Approval Voting and Condorcet are even better.

See http://www.electionmethods.org/ for details.
