Zeno's Paradox
July 26, 2003 - Stupid California Democrats

Gray Davis to fight for office. Prediction #1: he will waste a lot of resources in order to stay in power -- resources that the Dems will need in 2004. Prediction #2: he will lose. Prediction #3: centrist Dems will be pissed that he wasted so much money and time and allowed a Republican to take the California governorship. Prediction 4: Democrats, California ones in particular, will look like their heads are still firmly up their collective rectums. Davis, do your party a favor and resign -- keep the governor's seat in the Democratic Party, and save everyone a lot of grief in the process. Moron.

Not sure if I agree with you on this one--particularly given the terminator is not likely to run. The problem for any reasonable republican is that the recall is an inherently stupid idea that was funded by right wing nuts. Except the conservative and moderate wings of the Republican party to compete and split the vote. In that case Davis might squeek by. On the other hand, if Davis were to quit the race then there is a risk that a whole bunch of Democrats decide to run and split the vote on the left. In that case we might as well just draw the next Governor out of a hat.

Given that the Running Man is not running, I may agree with you a bit more. I agree with you about the recall being funded by a right-wing nut, however if Davis had not done such a botched job as governor (~ 23% approval rating), the right wing nuts would not have had the opening for the recall.

I think you are probably right about the vote splitting. Again, see my comments re: heads in rectums -- is it so hard for the Dems to coordinate in order to not split the vote?

BTW -- there's a good summary of the issue at Business Week (http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/aug2003/nf2003081_5425_db045.htm).

"Right-wing nut" -- Chris, you're starting to sound like a Democrat!

Now that we know the Terminator is running, it's a whole new ballgame.

I usually vote Democrat, but he's right about where I like to be, these days -- socially liberal and fiscally responsible. If I'd registered to vote in my mother's state before going to school in Jersey, I'd be voting for him, I think...
