Zeno's Paradox
February 05, 2003 - Procrastination

Phew... 'Tis been a good while since I've updated this thing...

Well, I only have one excuse for having been such a lousy updater as of late. "Robotech: Battlecry". I picked up the game at about the time the prior entries had been written, and I've been playing it since. I figure that since I have the game beat now (without all the special features unlocked), I might as well post an entry here.

First off, about the monkey on my back... Battlecry is a shooter game that attempts to be true to the Robotech (not Macross) franchise while providing new material to the canon. In this game, you can fly about as a plane, plane/robot hybrid, and a giant robot. All forms are available throughout the game and half the battle is figuring out which form to use to conquer a given challenge. There are forty-six levels and extra goals to accomplish (namely conquering the same levels additional times). Most of the extras are for multiplayer gaming, so they're of limited utility for me.

As far as the game -- it's solid. However, I was frustrated many times by sometime slow controls and invisible barriers on levels that has the effect of getting one stuck in a corner while baddies pound your ass with rockets and lasers. Overall, the game was fun though.

So, what's new in my life? Not too much at the moment. Kasey, a high school classmate of mine, has been camping out here while she finds a place to live and a job in Chicago. Having another person in the apartment has been a pleasant distraction. However, I still have yet to make it out to the YMCA as I've been vowing and I remain in deplorable physical shape.

Work has also kept me busy. I've been working on implementing a audio annotation system within Oyez that works with the RealOne player's incomplete implementation of the SMIL specification. When I'm not working on that, I've been hammering out the administrative backend for the site. In addition to Oyez, I'm also neck-deep in videoconferencing development, testing and planning on development for SIP-based messaging clients. There's some neat software coming out in the area that allows for *gasp* standards based videoconferencing across platforms. It's a pretty interesting space to be in at the moment. This all keeps me pretty busy.

Such is life.
