Zeno's Paradox
January 15, 2003 - At Microsoft

From a hotel suite across the street from Microsoft?s operating systems group, I write this blog entry?

I left my apartment yesterday at 8:30 AM to make my way to O?Hare airport for a United Airlines flight to Seattle/Tacoma airport. I ended up with a friendly cabbie for the trip to the airport and he told me a bit about the cab business and other miscellaneous tidbits of Chicago trivia. We arrived at the airport without incident and my flight was also pretty uneventful. I scanned through the SkyMall catalog and watched the in-flight movie, S1MONE. The movie was better than I would have expected and I thought that Al Pacino did a pretty decent job as a nutty director.

Upon arriving in Washington, I waited for Larry Amiot, my colleague from Northwestern with whom I?m working on video-conferencing software. He picked up a rental car from Avis and drove us to the hotel. I think that he had gotten too used to driving a SUV because he didn?t seem quite comfortable driving a Chevy Malibu.

After checking in, I called a former business partner and friend that works for Microsoft. Robin popped over after my call and drove me over to his office in Microsoft?s campus. He had a pretty sweet office (this is coming from a cubicle resident). Robin showed me Microsoft?s test lab for new operating system design and I was suitably impressed. There were plenty of rack mounted PC?s and many multi-processor Itanium and AMD Sledgehammmer machines. It was neat looking around. After the lab tour, we went back to his office and chatted about random things. Robin told me about his impending marriage with his college sweetheart in Oklahoma. It seems that he has his stuff figured out and that he?s really going to enjoy being married. I know that for me now, the idea of getting married makes me extremely skittish. I guess for me, I?m not quite ready to give up all the options of things I can do while ?unattached?, and I?ll probably not be ready for becoming fully domestic until I have a few more adventures and see the world a bit more. However, given that qualifier, I may also end up a perpetual bachelor as I don?t know how much traveling and adventuring will be ?enough?. That?s not to say that I?m unhappy with my situation with Holly ? nothing could be further from the truth. I have no intentions of searching anyone else out and I?m very happy with the time I spend and stuff that I do with Holly. I guess our relationship is in a good spot at the moment and I?m interested in pushing things farther for the sake of pushing things farther. Fortunately, Holly seems to be of the same opinion.

After talking to Robin, I came back to the hotel and met Larry for dinner. We ended up heading to a steakhouse and I was happy to eat a big hunk of beef. My meat eating has become more rare since I moved out of New Mexico and went to college and moved out on my own. Anymore, I may eat chicken or pork instead of beef. So a steak with sautéed mushrooms was a welcome change.

Since it?s dark now and the sun has yet to rise, I?m recharging my batteries for my digital camera and I?ll try taking a few pictures of the area and posting them later. Until then, readers will have to be satisfied with written updates for now.
