Zeno's Paradox
January 13, 2003 - Heading to Redmond

Tomorrow, I'll be on my way to Redmond to attend a Microsoft developer's conference on real-time communications.

Other than my trip tomorrow (I'll be gone through Friday), not much is going on. I attended a meeting this morning with the folks at Mythryn. They're handling the architectural and artistic elements of Oyez. I enjoyed the meeting and they didn't seem to be bullshit spinners like I'm accustomed to thinking when I hear the phrase "consultant". We had a productive meeting and it was nice to meet the faces behind the e-mail addresses.

Holly visited over the weekend and we ended up being low key and hanging out at my place since the it was so cold outside. I showed her how to sell on eBay (her auction) and I ended up selling quite a bit myself. I caught the bug and took yesterday as an opportunity to clean out my closet a bit and get rid of some equipment and things that I wasn't using. My auctions include a portable radio, a PocketPC device, peripherals, and other things. I ended up deciding to sell the iPaq since I don't use it for tasks or calendars or schedules (doesn't talk to my TiBook) and all I was using it for was as a glorified Solitaire player on the train. I figure that I'll get rid of it and pick out a simpler PalmOS-based device that has better battery life and works better with my existing infrastructure. I did decide to keep the 802.11b CompactFlash card I purchased a month ago in hopes that I can use it for other things.

After eBaying my stuff, I surfed the web a bit and noticed that BestBuy was having a sale on jet black GameCubes. Since I had a 10% off coupon, I decided that it was time to get the Cube. I trekked out to the store and agonized that there wasn't a copy of "Robotech: Battlecry" for the GameCube. I instead picked up a copy of "Star Wars: Rogue Leader" and a memory card to go with the console. The price came out to be $190 after taxes. Not bad for a brand new console, a great game, and memory card.

I'm really impressed with "Rogue Leader". To me it appears to be the exact same as the larger Sega arcade machines and the graphics are just as good. And you don't have to pay three quarters to play for half a minute. I really like the graphics, the voices, and the overall presentation. My only gripe is the on-screen navigation elements that make it very difficult for one to see where an opponent is in three dimensional space. I liked the dual circles in the previous Star Wars flight sims - one for front, one for back - but with these, I can't tell where anything is in the space missions. On planet-based missions such as Hoth (lots of fun), I'm alright. But in the space missions I'm lucky if I even see a TIE, much less shoot one down. If I can figure this aspect out, I'll like the game much more and will do much better. Overall I'm impressed with the capabilities of the machine.

(Yes, I am closing this entry without a proper closing or conclusion. Dangle away...)
