Zeno's Paradox
November 11, 2002 - Weekend update and Monday notes

Well, we're getting close to the half-way point of November, and I have yet to see a bit of snow. However, it's plenty wet and cold outside... It's days like today that make one want to stay at home and watch movies and read books on a couch with a warm blanket and pillow.

On to the weekend notes...

Holly came over on Friday and we managed to catch a viewing of The Spirit of St. Louis as part of Northwestern's Block Museum Friday Billy Wilder film series. It was a nice film and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'd never really watched a Jimmy Stewart film, and this one has me wanting to see a few more.

I started running with my new shoes on Saturday. I didn't push it hard, but my ankle needs to get stronger before I get too ambitious. That evening, I went to see Holly at her place and we went to a birthday party for a brother of a friend (or something like that) who had just turned thirty. Of course, I didn't know anyone -- but it was entertaining nonetheless and I managed to finally try out the Stoli malt drink. (Which tasted exactly like Bacardi's malt drink, which tastes a lot like Smirnoff's malt drink.)

Sunday was largely uneventful. I putzed around as always and did a bit of work on the GPS code. I'm in the process of reengineering it in order to have a more solid package, and I managed to get a bit of that done on Saturday and Sunday. I've also started reading Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. It's a really good read, though a bit depressing. However, there are up parts and McCourt has done a good job of presenting things through the eyes of a child. I'm just about a fifth through it, but it has been a surprisingly good read. I've been out of the habit of reading for a bit too long, and this is a pretty good book to get me back into the habit again. Who knows -- after I finish this, I may just pick up the Michael Collins biography that I've been reading a chapter at a time at Barnes & Nobels.

I also spent a good amount of time last night working on YASWF (yet another silly website feature). Basically, I thought that it would be cool if I could let people listen to the same thing I am by using WinAmp with an Internet audio broadcast. So, I struggled last night with trying to set up Icecast on a Linux box, but was ultimately unsuccessful. I punted on the Linux box and downloaded NullSoft's Shoutcast server and managed to pipe the speaker-out from my TiBook through Winamp to Shoutcast and out to the Internet. Steve helped me troubleshoot things, and we managed to get him a 64 kbit stream of "The Mothman Prophecies" soundtrack in return. I started it up this morning with volume two of "Macross: The Complete", but it appears that the server is down at the moment. I still need to do a good deal of configuring before it is ready for prime time, but things are looking optimistic. I would have done more last night, but I had to call it quits by 2:00 AM. Needless to say, I have not started running today as I has promised myself. :-P I'm still salvagable if I can get up the energy to run after work, but the weather does not make me optimistic.

Now, my cricket is telling me to get back to work. I have a grotty database to decide what to do with and it's getting on to lunch time.

GSOF -- down a quarter as I type.
