Casualties (MP3)

Well, after thinking about what I want to do with my life outside work, I decided that I needed to find a hobby. (Watching downloaded TV shows does not count.)Anyways, after much angsting about what things I could do that would make me a more interesting person and keep me interested in turn, I came up with the following criteria:

- My new hobby could not have anything to do with a computer. The idea is to get me off the computer.

- The less practical the hobby is, the better. The idea is that I would have something I could do that is so completely unrelated to any other aspects of my life that I could get lost in it for hours and feign guiltiness of having enjoyed myself so completely.

- No video games.

- It has to be something somewhat involving and bonus points are awarded if I can use the hobby as a creative outlet.

So, with those ideas in mind, I came up with the following list: running and weight training, sailing or windsurfing, skydiving, community service, foreign language acquisition, art classes (metal sculpture, in particular), or learning to play a musical instrument.

Running and weight training is something that I need to do anyways, so that made the cut. However, I have to figure out how to get a weight set in my apartment. (Bowflex, perhaps?)

Sailing and windsurfing are currently out of the running as it's too cold to be falling into Lake Michigan.

Skydiving would be cool, but given the number of fatalities around these parts recently, I think I'll take my chances doing something else.

Community service would be good, but since I don't have a car, I cannot do the type of service I would like to do (mentoring kids / being a "big brother").

Foreign language acquisition is out of the question until I can find some Russian friends who would not be too annoyed at my bad Russian.

Art class is appealing, but metal sculpture is something that would be fun to do (I've played with a welder more than my share melting stuff in high school shop), but it's expensive and I would need to find someone to pawn my art off to.

The musical instrument is the most appealing of the bunch. I know nothing about music and its theory, and I think it would be fun to learn. It's something that I would like to do and don't need circuits to do so (though after I've mastered the basics, combining what I would know about music and what I know about computers has a lot of promise) and it's impractical enough to be fun. The obvious instrument to learn would be the guitar, but I think that I'm more interested in learning something like the violin. I did some looking on Amazon about finding books to teach the violin, and I also thought that I should listen to some music on MP3.Com to be sure that I liked the violin sound.

Anyways, while browsing, I managed to discover the band Red Delicious by accident. I listened to "Casualties" and was hooked on the band. I really enjoy their sound. The funny thing is that I didn't pick up any violin in their songs.
