Balconies, Rooftops and Decks

City Farmer Head Gardener, Sharon Slack, shares her recipe for starting a container garden.

Any container will do.
Drainage holes can be covered with leaves, stones, or broken pottery.
Organic fertilizers and amendments will make plants strong.
Mix potting soil, glacial rock dust and an organic 4-4-4 fertilizer.
Place compost on your drainage layer at the bottom of the container.
Place potting soil and fertilizer mixture on top of compost.
Place 'growth supplement' in a hole ready for planting.
Plant Sweet Green Pepper (or Chard), Petunias, Parsley, and Alyssum.
Place a final mulch layer of compost around plants. Water regularly.
