Roskilde Festival 2004This post is
Work in
progress!!!!
Read on for my report from Roskilde Festval 2004! Roskilde Festival can be summarized with one word
-
mud.
And I promise that everyone who was there will know in the future which festival
you're talking about if you enter that word. It was raining, than some sun, than
some more rain. Then wind. And rain. Then more rain during the entire fucking
week. It wasn't that bad though. Not for us at least. We had a well organized
camp with a large tent which was divided in two parts. First part for luggage
and dirty clothes, footwear. The other part for sleeping only. Very convenient.
Talking about footwear. I'm seriously considering writing a letter to the
manufacturer of my boots, Dr
Martens, and tell them how tremendously pleased I am about their
products. I wore my boots for almost an entire week. Waded through water, mud up
to the heels and they kept my dry, warm and comfortable all the time. Amazing.
![]() One of my boots, covered with mud. Note: It was far worse a few days later. Many weren't as fortunate and had mud up to their knees. Here are some more mud pictures: ![]() Jenny, at the festival area. ![]() More mud. ![]() Johan, tired of the weather. ![]() At our camp. Johan talking to a neighbour from Värmland. One of the worst aspects of the festival is all the people. Yes, I'm serious. Many of the festival guests are awful, leftist bohemians who want to have filth all around them. Just take a look at this picture: ![]() Filth behind our tent. Niclas and Linda (also living in our camp) acutally found that someone had taken a shit behind their tent. The smell. Damn. People. I hate them. Band reviews This reflect my personal experience only. Some bands I'd barely heard before and sometimes I didn't see the whole show. Just my opinion only. Bands are listed in the order we saw them. Mnemic (DK) This Danish metalband played on the Orange Stage for very few people. They were supposed to do some "industrial metal influenced by bands like Fear Factory". I really like Fear Factory but this band came nowhere close. They were really nervous and the sound was awful. The singer had really bad carisma and sounded like an angry schoolboy when he screamed/shouted at the audience between the few songs we saw before leaving the crappy concert. Jaipur Kawa Brass Band (Ind) This indian brass band delivered some really cool rhythmic music on trumpets, saxophones and other brass instruments. They were like five, six guys on the stage all dress in white indian clothes and red turbans. Wow! Unfortunately we wanted to see another band at the same time so we hurried away to Arena after just a few tunes. Dropkick Murphys (US) This was one of the best shows on the entire festival. The crazy, heavily irish-influenced guys from Boston (?) brought us tight, fast-paced punkrock and did it with style and heart! It was hard to stand still and people in the audience were dancing and singing along in almost every song. I haven't much of Murphys, but I'll definitely check them out more closely after this! Let's go Murhpys! Sahara Hotnights (SWE) This band of five chicks from sweden have been playing together for some years now, and they started off as a very small band. I remember they played on "Blekingska" in Lund, which is a very small student stage. Now they have risen to fame and played at the second largest stage on Roskilde Festival. Unfortunately they were really bad live and was lacking in energy, especially the vocals. Boring and failing to handle the crowd. Korn (US) They came, they saw, they ruled Roskilde! As one of the main acts on the festival, Korn played on the immense Orange Stage and had probably several tens of thousands of people more or less jumping up and down. We grabbed nice places at the front where we could witness the tight and energizing performance. Great songs like Freak on a Leash, Blind and Got the Life made people ecstatic! They even played a Pink Floyd cover! 'We don't need no education' - Or do we? I do. Hehe. ![]() Some of the crowd at the Korn show. Within Tempation (NL) We saw the dutch gothmetal band as supporting act to Paradise Lost some years ago, and they were not very impressive. Since then the band have written some really good songs and made a breakthrough in parts of Europe. They could even be seen in commercials on Swedish TV! A highly decorated Arena stood to their disposal at Roskilde and Within Temptation did a really good show. The lead singer in her gorgeous dress sings as good live as in the studio. I expect a bright future for them if they can continue writing this kind of material! Still haven't bought the current CD, Mother Earth, but that's just a matter of time. Silvério Pessoa (BRA) Hard to categorize this brazilian band, but they played folk music influenced by both rock and rhythmic genres like salsa and hip hop. Very funky and an excellent show. The lead singer was bouncing around on the scene of the Roskilde Ballroom and it was hard to stand still. We saw this band by chance since no one of us felt like seeing Slipknot, the hyped nu-metalband. Pixies (US) I can't say I'm a die-hard Pixies-fan, but they have made some really good songs. My favorite is probably "The Happening". But this show lacked energy and was actually kinda boring even though we had great places in the front. After half an hour we left, happy to have seen the band but still quite disappointed with the show. The Hives (SWE) The Hives have been called the best live-band in Sweden, and I tend to agree. Explosive and cocky attitude combines with catchy punk-rock tunes made this an extraordinary show. The singer also ridiculed the Danes mildly, which was kinda amusing. :-) The Hives have only released one album, but the new one will come out later this year! The Royal Danish Opera (DK) This was something completely different from the rest of the festival. The Tivoli Symphony Orchestra and a 66-head choir plus five opera solists took on the Arena stage in front of a full audience. And people were thrilled! I don't think the poor musicians have experiences such handclapping in any of their previous shows. People actually clapped to the music, which is very difficult to classical music which seldom has a steady pace. Anyway, the "Royal Danish Opera" did a magnificent performance and did some of the classical "hits" including O Sole Mio and parts from an opera I can't remember now. Also some nice parts from Wagner's Tannhäuser. Morbid Angel (US) Only saw little of this show. Nothing special. I've seen heavy metal before, this was nothing out of the ordinary. Iggy and the Stooges (US) Iggy Pop still lives! Lots of action on the Orange Stage as legendary Iggy Pop and the Stooges entered! This was a really good show, but unfortunately we were "forced" out by the heavy rain. The crowd safety staff didn't like my umbrella. Damnit! Bergman Rock (SWE) Swedish Bergman Rock is really the band Bob Hund but now in english instead of swedish. We had hoped for, and were prepared for, the old songs but in english. But they did all-new songs instead! The songs were actually better than Bob Hund. Lead singer were as crazy and charismatic as always, moving out in the crowd and singing with hands all over him. Still I didn't really like Bergman Rock that much. Perhaps due to the fact that the singer can't really sing. Raised Fist (SWE) Another band fairly new to me. The played on Odeon - the rock stage. Combination of Machine Head-like metal and fast paced punk they did an overall very good show. Santana (US) Wu-Tang Clan (US) The Solution (SWE/US) More stuff here later, incl. pictures!
