Dolphins respond to humans speaking to them with clicks, squeaks and whistles. They do not exhibit fear of humans or desire to do harm even after so many centuries of harm by humans. Their sound systems are fascinating. They identify objects and discriminate between objects by echo-location. They emit ultrasonic signals which they decipher as the signals return.
Why can't we get the dolphin's message?
The dolphin sonar system operates from a few hundred to 165 000 hertz - vibration cycles or pressure waves per second. Our speech is within 300-3 000 hertz. We are out of range.
Dolphins might in the future warn us of "mass-murder machinations" on the sea-floor that are causing worldwide earthquakes and tsunamis. Until we find a way to dialogue with dolphins we can avoid making ecological mistakes.
