PowerPC Performa 6400
|

|
1997 November 12
We bought the "Performa"
with Boca Research 33.6
external modem;
and upgraded to
maximum 136 MB RAM.
We were stuck with
1 MB Video RAM.
The hard disk drive
was only 1.6 GB.
We fixed a 3.5 GB
Quantum Fireball
SCSI hard disk drive
in the spare bay;
Adaptec 2930 in
1 of 2 PCI slots;
and external Iomega
Jaz 2 GB SCSI drive.
The software
seemed worth more than
the hardware
for our work.

PowerPC Performa 6400 603e 180 MHz
The Performa is obsolete by current standards.
Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.2 will not run at all.
Mac OS 9.1 runs sluggishly.
We need Mac OS to use "BootX" to boot Linux;
and in case we have to trouble-shoot or probe some peculiarities.
It was promoted as a multimedia machine with surround sound.
We appreciated the design and style of Apple Multiple Scan 15AV monitor
that came with it.
Technical comment in MacUser April 1996 page 117 and April 1997 page 95.
This Performa came with Mac OS 7.5.3 updated to Mac OS 8.
We never complained about its performance with ClarisWorks
AppleWorks later and that splendid OpenDoc Cyberdog application.
We used to hone our skill with many MacFormat CD-ROMs
especially REDSHIFT and WeiRd.
We experimented with LinuxPPC 2000. It was very fast then but now defunct.
So we put a second hard disk in the spare bay above the CD-ROM drive bay
and installed Debian GNU/Linux sid running kernel 2.4.22-powerpc.
We installed Debian Junior on it to let children and ourselves too
learn programming intuitively. We love to play circuslinux and
dabble with KDE 3.2 kdeeduca programmes.
This machine is hardy and versatile.
The sound is still good but the video has gone.
So we retain the Multiple Scan AV monitor for audio output;
and invest in a ViewSonic E70 CRT 17-inch monitor for video output.
Since mid-2004 the CD-ROM drive and floppy drive have gone too.

- questions
- We are dumb; we feel so impoverished;
so loathsome having to accept aid from people whom we detest
for their crusade against us.
US warships in Selat Melaka? On humanitarian mission?
Aren't we dumb? Don't we know the crusaders' agenda?
- We are reasonably suspicious
as they insist on bilateral bribery and bullying
bypassing the UN in offerring aid which could go
into the pockets of the corrupt ones in our midst.
We are inclined to ignore "pledges" and "promises"
made only for public relations.
- Many keep asking: why?
We hace no answer. We are dumb dumb ....
We don't know what's really happening on the sea-floor.
- Our loved ones lost too soon
aren't puppets of evil or puppets of puppets of evil
like those who make lives miserable with their greed for oil,
their bullying, their warring and their massacring.
- Heartless and ruthless vultures in our midst
are resorting to children-and-women-trafficking
for abuses - prostitution, forced labor, slavery...
- We grieve about the dead; we grieve more about our people
struggling to hold on to life after so many years of work
and progress have gone with the dead. We grieve too that
this should happen to our guests on holiday here.
We are dumb; we can't fight back or shout back
at the earthquake and the entailing tsunami.

- We are indeed thankful for all the help.
- Still, we can never forget
- the cruel crusade against us.
-
- We do not forget people put in distress
- in Palestine, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Somalia,
- Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Chechnya and elsewhere.
- BBC coverage seemed skewed to western "aid" sending the marines
- "jatuh tangga ditimpa tangga".
- We used tp prefer "BBC" to "CNN".
Lately it seemed like American propaganda adjunct.
- timeline
- The response
- to call for help is wonderful.
- People can and do help one another.
- Why not sustain this momentum to cover aid in Africa and elsewhere for people struggling against HIV/AIDS and poverty?
- We are already poor in this region.
- A few million of us will be so marginalised
- into the next decade or two.
- tsunami
- The earthquake and entailing tsunami came and went for 1 day.
- Our people in Palestine are still struggling
- against the day by day political and economic
- disaster inflicted by Israel that is fully
- funded by Anglo-Amricans for at least 56 years.
- We are suspicious
- about this weird earthquake and tsunami.
- Reaction by the US administration followed by the Australian government sent strange signals. We don't trust these puppets of Zion.
- Our anxieties about the presence of US warships in "Selat Melaka" are rising to "alert and alarm" zones.
- Joe has raised questions we should address thoroughly.
-
- We have to move on
- and work for brighter days.
- We will pick up the pieces and begin again.
- We will do the best for survivors
- especially the children - our asset our wealth
- for the future of our region.
- We will develop the best system to help us
- prevent so many deaths the next time.
