I recently updated the
Staff page on our church site
with the following paragraph:
Elders are
also called shepherds (pastors) and overseers in
the Scriptures. They are responsible for
guarding the spiritual lives of worshippers and
for making sure sound doctrine is taught in the
church (Titus 1:9). They are advocates of
spiritual growth in the church rather than a
clearing house for decision-making. They are
less like dictators or CEO's and more like good
and loving fathers.

"There's nothing wrong with wanting to "do"
church effectively. When, however, we adopt
uncritically the langauge of corporate America and
its marketing gurus, we cannot help but also import a
raft of unwanted baggage. Along with that language
comes a template for thinking. The language
constructs a model and paradigm for action which may
indeed seem wise and relevant, but which is in fact
antithetical to the contrarian nature of the
gospel.

I pulled this off Tony Morgan's
blog this morning... good
stuff! Letterman's top ten list goes for the
laugh, Tony's causes you to think and reflect.
It's never a good thing to love the wineskin
more than we love the Wine...
1. You see other organizations as the competition
instead of the idea incubators
2. You're trying to avoid criticism that comes when
you fail... and when you succeed.
3. You're afraid of the culture.
4. Your life is fast and cluttered and there's no
space to dream.

You are in your car driving home. Thoughts wander to
the game you want to see or meal you want to eat,
when suddenly a sound unlike any you've ever heard
fills the air. The sound is high above you. A
trumpet? A choir? A choir of trumpets? You don't
know, but you want to know.
So you pull over, get out of your car, and look up.
As you do, you see you aren't the only curious one.
The roadside has become a parking lot. Car doors are
open, and people are staring at the sky. Shoppers are
racing out of the grocery store. The Little League
baseball game across the street has come to a halt.
Players and parents are searching the clouds.. And
what they see, and what you see, has never before
been seen.

"Every wise workman takes his tools away from the
work from time to time that they may be ground and
sharpened; so does the only wise Jehovah take his
ministers oftentimes away into darkness and
loneliness and trouble, that he may sharpen and
prepare them for harder work in his service."
Robert Murray M'Cheyne
"The suffering you sent was good for me, for it
taught me to pay attention to your principles."
(Psalm 119:71)
