I read with incredulity today's Daily Express headline, "Bombers are all sponging asylum seekers". I assume that the headline was meant to convey that all those involved with the incidents in London were asylum seekers, but it's possible to interpret the headline as meaning that all bombers, rather than one specific group, are asylum seekers. This is inaccurate. No formal charges have been brought against any suspects. They are not yet 'bombers', merely suspected bombers; to suggest otherwise is misleading. Those who seek asylum can have legitimate reasons for doing so, and that far from looking for a free ride, are instead looking for freedom from persecution. 'Sponging' is therefore misleading. The evidence currently in the public domain suggests that Muktar Said Ibrahim, to take one example, is the son of asylum seekers. His parents were legally granted asylum in this country. Muktar Said Ibrahim, therefore, is not an asylum seeker; to suggest otherwise is inaccurate. Quite apart from these inaccuracies, I was dismayed and angered by the tone and subtext of the rest of the piece; it seemed to be designed to heighten tension between race groups in the UK and to legitimise any xenophobic sentiment in this country. The use of emotive language and generalisation was irresponsible. In-keeping with the terms of the PCC, I will wait 7 days before forwarding this complaint officially.
