Path width

Research has shown in Greenway projects that a fear of conflict exists where walkers meet cyclists on narrow paths. This illustrates such a situation. The vegetation unmanaged at the path margin worsens the problem. Compare this with the examples on the home page to this site, which illustrate our ideals.

Our view is that a 3.5m wide path structure, with a managed margin of 600 mm to 1 metre at the edges, will reduce the fear of conflict. If the main path is well drained, that margin will not be encroached upon.

Poor drainage causes local widening.

The specification above has been used in other places with great success, and although 3.5m seems a lot in practice, edge grasses grow over it and the apparent width is about 3metres (approximately 10 feet for those more used to Imperial measure).
