The Parkland Walk was, in the 1970s, equipped with entrance steps and handrails, some gated maintenance entrances. The old track ballast gave a reasonable surface. Over time these have all deteriorated, and worst of these problems is poor drainage and the resultant muddy patches with the widening of the walkway where people get round the mucky bits.
See the separate page that shows more surface problems.

Circumstances have changed and entrances designed to allow maintenance vehicles, prams and cycles in also allow mopeds to get on the Walk. These entrances need to be revisited and improved if possible. Some new entrances have created informally and original steps have now lost their handrails. There is a new duty on the two owning authorities to take steps to ensure that people with impairments (physical and sensory) are not discriminated against. This means that as a public facility the entrances and surfaces must be put right.

In some places the path is excessively wide, in others about right and in others it is getting overgrown, to the point that some users feel threatened either through potential conflict with users coming up behind them or the other way on bikes, or a perception that forward visiibilty is not good enough which causes people to worry about who might be waiting ahead. There is a balance to be struck between the interest of the Walk as a nature reserve and Green Chain and its role as a recerational asset and a route to several schools.

Some surfaces have attracted spray painted murals, some are attractive others just look like vandalism. Should some areas be used for the best to be displayed? Should it all be obliterated?
See the separate page that shows more grafitti issues.

There are four systems of signage at least and some interpretation boards. Should these be rationalised?
