I'll be there

After the echo

Of my voice recedes

From the farthest

Corners of this room

I'll be there

After you think I'm gone

I'll be there

After death and taxes

I'll be there

Like footsteps of the past

Half moons on marble stairs

My presence will be felt

I'll be there

After King Tut

Turns to dust

I'll be there

When the moon

Melts into the sea

I'll be there

When I am but a shadow

Of my own shadow

I'll be there

In the wind that's

Behind a mounting wave,

Upturns a leaf

Buffets a storm

And whispers gently in your ear

I'll be there, I'll be there, be there, be there, be there ... always

Nick Alicino

Nicholas J. Alicino Jr., 55, of Cooperstown died peacefully, with his family present, late Wednesday afternoon, March 10, 2004, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Mass., after a long illness.

Nick was born on Jan. 3, 1949, in the Bronx, a son of Nicholas J. and Mary Regina Alicino. He later moved to New Jersey where he spent his adolescent and teen years.

He married Carole Manginelli on March 22, 1975.

For 19 years, Nick was a ninth-grade English teacher at Cooperstown High School, after having spent five years teaching at Milford Central School. During his tenure at Cooperstown High School, he served as the coach of the tennis team, was advisor for the school newspaper, was organizer and MC of numerous open-mics, was director of senior plays and also organized and chaperoned students on trips overseas.

In the year 2000, Nick's students honored him by dedicating the Cooperstown Central School yearbook, Reflections, to him. Whether he was in the classroom, on the tennis court, or in foreign countries, he was an overwhelming inspiration and mentor to many students.

A lover of poetry, he was well-known in this area for his poetry readings. He introduced many students to Shakespeare and had the ability to bring out the inner poet in many people. A published writer, many of his works can be read at his website, www.nickalicino.com.

Nick was happiest spending time with his family, as well as listening to music, playing tennis, trout fishing, and writing. He found great peace while spending time out on Otsego Lake in his boat, as well as following the Buddhist path.

A member of the Cooperstown community for 22 years, his amiable personality and lively spirit touched many lives and will not be forgotten. He will be greatly missed.

Nick is survived by his wife of 29 years, Carole of Cooperstown; two daughters, Lisa Alicino of Cooperstown and Megan Alicino of Brooklyn; his parents, Nick and Gene Alicino of Red Bank, N.J.; his mother-in-law, Pauline Manginelli of the town of Maryland; three sisters, his twin, Christine Alicino of San Francisco, Calif., Mary Alicino of Bedford, and Rita Wheatly of West Greenwich, R.I.; three brothers, Tom Alicino of New Brunswick, N.J., Michael Alicino of Cooperstown, and Mark Alicino of Fairfax, Calif.; and 16 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Frank Alicino.

Expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to Carole Alicino, 14 Mill St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 and will be used to establish an academic scholarship foundation in Nick's name which will be given each year to a Cooperstown High School student who shows promise as a writer.
