On 22 January 2011, the Cherry Trees Residents’
Association lost its long-time chairman, and hundreds of
its members also lost a dear and close friend, when
Willoughby Wynne died at Cromwell Hospital of a cancer that
very few were aware of.
He was only 76.
Willoughby was the association’s chairman for more
than 20 years until the AGM on 15 November 2010, when he
very surprisingly announced that he was stepping down and
handing over to deputy chairman Charles Penney. At a
committee meeting only a week earlier he had said that he
wanted to remain chairman a little bit longer, but it is
possible that a visit to the doctor in between made him
change his mind.
Those attending his funeral in the Carmelite Church on 1
February were left in no doubt about the extent of his
circle of friends. The church seats over 600, but at least
an additional hundred had to stand at the back during the
service.
