iPhone linked to Cingular in exclusive

Apple's not reading any of my iPhone posts. Surprise!

If they did make a habit of reading apple-project they'd know that an unlocked iPhone is a must.

Today there's news/rumor that Apple has inked an exclusive deal with Cingular. But why? Does Apple need Cingular, or any other carrier?

If this was '95, I might not have blinked at the idea that Apple would partner with a provider, but this is 2006. Unlocked phones thrive in the marketplace. I've got a W810i and it's a quad-band phone. It should work anywhere in the world, it just needs a SIM card.

So why is Apple partnering, or rumored to be, with Cingular. I hope to find out more in the months ahead. In the meantime, I hope Apple is at least reading MacRumors and the comments there on this story.

I still think Apple might eventually launch their own nation-wide network of some sort. They own part of Akamai, so they get the network thing, and they have the real estate, and those holdings are growing by the week.

Alas, until then we might well be stuck with Cingular.
