MP3 Phone: the elephant in the room

Mike sent me this article about Sony Ericsson's new music service this morning. After reading it one thing stood out:

"Strategy Analytics has said that close to 100 million phones sold this year will have a built-in music player and that number will grow to almost 800 million units by 2010. That compares with 8.11 million iPods sold in the April-June quarter, up 32 percent from a year earlier but down from 8.5 million in the January-March quarter."

100 million this year. Apple has sold something like 60 million iPods in total. There are a whole lot more MP3 phones than there are iPods to put it another way.

I'm not saying the sky is falling, but this new service says one thing to me: SE's not going to be partnering with the ITMS anytime soon and that's a bummer for Apple shareholders.
