New 24-inch Media PC, I mean, iMac

Nice. Apple has updated their iMac line to include a new 24-inch iMac. That's huge. It's fairly well spec'd and reasonably priced at $1999, $1899 at Apple's online education store.

I've got a 20-inch iMac (PPC 2.1Ghz, because I need Classic for one app) and find the display large enough, but the 24-inch is very tempting.

That said, I remember when the 20-inch suspended display iMac (that's not the 20-inch in the photo) shipped and my reaction then. I didn't think the proportions of the 20-inch display hanging on the same sized dome as the rest of the iMac line worked well. The overall look was top-heavy and awkward.

The 17-inch display proportions were perfect, however. I wonder if the same factor might be at work with the new 24-inch Intel iMac? My hunch is that it actually looks fantastic. I'll swing my my ARS shortly and check it out in person.

On the subject of media PCs, Apple is close to producing a very nice Mac that could replace someone's TV. 24-inches is small, but if the iMac ever uses the 30-inch display, count me in. They are getting closer, though, and that's what counts.

Don't forget How to Buy a Mac.
