.Mac (DotMac): Off with its head! or Can't live without it!

TUAW posed the question (in their awful engadget-like writing style): .Mac, love it or leave it? What's most interesting about the post are the comments. Over sixty at the time I posted this. Check them out.

I didn't attempt to calculate the results of the comments, but there are definitely .Mac lovers and haters both. What I found most interesting is that there seemed to be a consensus on the notion that .Mac needs a refresher and some new features.

Couldn't agree more. It seems like Apple is milking this cow. As for me, I'm probably going to renew my membership, but I won't pay another $100 for maxed online storage and throughput. Desktop to iDisk transfer is great for small files, but anything over 20MB is disastrously slow.

Why do I keep my .Mac membership active? I don't need the email or hosting: I've got hosting accounts (w/email) through Pair.com. I don't need any of .Macs features, and certainly not for the price Apple charges, but frankly I like being part of the .Mac, and by extension the larger Mac community. It's worth the $8-ish/month in the end.

Don't forget How to Buy a Mac.
