Rank and Military Structure
(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 09/15/2002)
Introduction
All members of the Templar caste are assigned a rank. This rank represents not only their position within the military,
but also within their clan and the Templar caste. Unlike most Human military structures, the Protoss do not create a
distinction between officers and enlisted troops. While there are lower ranked and higher ranked soldiers, the rank
structure is entirely vertical, with one exception: the rank of Pilot and Unit Leader are equivalent. The two
independent rank structures, for the Grand Army and the Grand Fleet, are designed to allow members of the Templar caste
to move between the two militaries, although this is very rare.
Many members of the Templar caste do not wish to rise above the rank of Group Leader within the Grand Army or Prelate
within the Grand Fleet. This is mainly because, once they reach a certain level of rank, they are required to detach
themselves from combat in order to effectively lead the large number of troops under their command, which is something
that many Protoss do not wish to do. Protoss that refuse to be promoted are not usually looked down upon by their
superiors or the caste. At any one time, there is only one Steward of the Templar, Steward of the Fleet, and Steward of
the Army. These three positions represent the overall authority within the Protoss military and the Templar caste.

Description of Grand Army Ranks
- Warrior
This is the lowest rank in the Grand Army, and all members of the Templar caste that join the Grand Army begin as
Warriors, from Zealot Warriors to the High Templar. The Warriors are the main troops of the Grand Army and the
Conclave and many troops willingly remain in this rank for their entire time in the military. Warriors command no
soldiers and are given their orders through the Warrior Leaders.
- Warrior Leader
A Templar warrior that wants to achieve a higher rank within the Grand Army must first become a Warrior Leader.
At this rank, the Protoss is given command of a platoon of warriors. High Templars are usually promoted to this
rank soon after they join the Grand Army. Templar warriors of this rank are often seen commanding squads or
platoons.
- Group Leader
A Templar warrior of this rank is given command of even more troops, up to a company of other warriors. At this
rank, some Group Leaders have command of a small military base or are placed in charge of the troops defending a
small colony. Templar warriors of this rank are often seen commanding companies or battalions.
- Prelate
A Prelate is given command of the equivalent to a battalion of troops. Some Prelates command a medium military
base or command the defenses for a medium sized colony. At this rank, the warrior is often expected to perform
many administrative tasks. Templar warriors of this rank are often seen commanding battalions or divisions.
- Praetor
At this rank, A Protoss is given command of the equivalent to a division of Templar warriors. Praetors are
crucial within the administrative side of the Grand Army and serve in nearly all high ranking positions not
occupied by the Executors. Templar warriors of this rank are often seen commanding divisions or field armies.
- Executor
The Executors are the generals of the army and command thousands of warriors each. Executors are allowed to take
control of elements from the Grand Fleet, and most armies are assigned a large fleet to allow them to travel from
one planet to another. Executors are assigned a Judicator Enforcer to oversee their actions and to ensure the
will of the Conclave is being followed. For example, Aldaris was assigned to oversee Executor Tassadar.
- Steward of the Army
The Steward of the Army commands the entire Grand Army, combining the role of Army Chief of Staff and Secretary
of the Army from the United States military into a single position. Only the Steward of the Templar and the
Conclave can give him orders. The Steward of the Fleet and the Steward of the Army work closely together to ensure
that the military is properly trained, equipped, and deployed.
Description of Grand Fleet Ranks
- Crewman
This is the lowest rank possible in the Grand Fleet. In this role, the warrior serves as a member of the crew aboard
one of the space ships. These warriors do not command anyone and their tasks include repair crews, maintenance,
engineers, medics, gun crews, and similar duties. This is the starting rank for all Protoss in the Grant Fleet,
within the exception of the Templar Pilot.
- Unit Leader
At this rank, a Templar is in charge of a relatively small group of Protoss warriors of the Crewman rank. Duty
officers, bridge officers, and unit commanders, such as the head of the third repair unit, are all roles that this
rank can be applied to. A High Templar is usually promoted to this rank soon after he joins the Grand Fleet.
- Pilot
All Templar Pilots begin at this rank, and only Templar Pilots are allowed to achieve this rank. Pilots advance
upwards from this rank and have authority over Crewman. Although nearly all Protoss with this rank are actually
pilots, there have been known cases where a Templar Pilot is assigned as an aide to a higher ranking member of the
Templar caste.
- Section Leader
This rank is held by Protoss warriors that command a major section of a ship, such as commanding the entire
engineering department or all of the weapons on a ship. Templar Pilots of this rank command a squadron of 6
fighters.
- Prelate
This would be the equivalent to the rank of Commander in many conventional ranking structures. These Templar
warriors are given command of small ships, such as frigates, or are placed second in command of larger ships.
Templar Pilots of this rank are usually given control of all fighters assigned to a single ship or military
base.
- Praetor
Praetors are the captains of large ships or squadrons of ships. Praetors also are given important administrative
positions within the Grand Fleet. This rank is the equivalent of Captain and the lower levels of the Admiral rank
within the shore establishments of a navy.
- Executor
The Executors are the admirals of the fleet and command hundreds of ships each. While they are assigned to a
flagship, they rarely command it themselves, allowing a Praetor to perform that duty while they direct the rest of
the fleet. Executors are allowed to take control of elements from the Grand Army, and most fleets are assigned a
large army in addition to the large number of ships. Executors are assigned a Judicator Enforcer to oversee their
actions and to ensure the will of the Conclave is being followed. For example, Aldaris was assigned to oversee
Executor Tassadar.
- Steward of the Fleet
The Steward of the Fleet commands the entire Grand Fleet, combining the role of Chief of Naval Operations and
Secretary of the Navy from the United States military into a single position. Only the Steward of the Templar and
the Conclave can give him orders. The Steward of the Fleet and the Steward of the Army work closely together to
ensure that the military is properly trained, equipped, and deployed.
