A Ghost Operative in Exo-Armor

The Ghost Project was started several decades ago by a secret department in the military of the Terran Confederacy. The Ghost Project was actually an amalgamation of several independent projects, most importantly a project to develop the latent psychic abilities of Humans and a seperate project to create highly trained assassins and special forces operatives. After years of research and experimentation, the project began to run out of volunteers from within the ranks of military, so it began to reach out into the civilians of the Terran Confederacy. The project developed tests to determine whether a child had the proper mental capabilities to develop psionic powers and if the child did, he or she was taken by the project forever. These children were brutally trained and countless experiments were run on them. Only a third of the children taken in by the project survived beyond the first three years. Eventually, the project turned a corner and the deathrate fell; the rate of experimentation slowed and the training program was refined and finalized. By the time of the rebellion on Korhal, several hundred Ghost Operatives had been fully trained and equipped.

When the Ghost Operatives began operating as part of the regular military, they quickly gained a reputation as effective, merciless killers. They were skilled soldiers, excellent marksmen, they possessed powers the regular soldiers had never seen before, and their self-imposed isolation even when surrounded by other soldiers simply increased the air of mystery around these soldiers. Although the Ghost Operatives operated with the regular military during some operatives, the majority of the time, the Ghosts operated alone or in small teams of Ghosts. One of the first missions for the Ghosts was to break into Angus Mensk's mansion fortress and kill him and his family. Angus Mensk was a popular leader on Korhal and the leaders of the Terran Confederacy believed that his death would stop a rising rebellion on that planet. The operation went off without problem, although the political fallout from Mensk's death increased the danger of the rebellion instead of stopping it.

The most famous of the Ghost Operatives was Sarah Kerrigan. Sarah began her life as a normal little girl until as part of a routine medical examine she was determined to have exceptional psionic powers. Immediately, Sarah was snatched up by the Ghost project and her exceptional powers caused her to be studied more invasively then most Ghosts. After years of training and beginning subjected to invasive experiments, Sarah Kerrigan was freed from the Ghost project by Arcturus Mensk, the leader of the Sons of Korhal, an organization that violently opposed the Terran Confederacy. Arcturus Mensk, the son of the late Angus Mensk, had learned of the Ghost project and its operatives from the death of his father and had determined to do all he could to destroy the project or to subvert its members. Unfortunately for Arcturus, all he could manage to do was release one of the project's most promising members, Sarah Kerrigan. For Sarah, this meant freedom from the Terran Confederacy and she immediately pledged her life to Arcturus and his cause. In the years that followed, Sarah proved her value time and time again, until the time came for Arcturus to make his bid for control of the Terran Confederacy. In an effort to lure the Zerg to Tarsonis, the capital of the Terran Confederacy, Arcturus had Sarah activate a powerful psionic emitter to draw the Zerg, Arcturus then abandoned Sarah on the Tarsonis so that she could ensure that emitter continued to operate until the Zerg arrived. When they did, Sarah's position was overrun and she was believed killed by the Zerg, unfortunately for Sarah, she was instead captured by the Zerg and transformed into the monster that later became the Queen of Blades, the ruler of the Zerg Swarms.

Once Arcturus Mensk destroyed the Terran Confederacy, he took control of its massive military machine. Some factions fought against his rule, but when he crowned himself Emperor of the Terran Dominion, the Ghost project was split in two. One faction split from the Ghost project and joined the various resistance groups that fought Mensk, but the majority of the Ghost Operatives remained to join the new Terran Dominion.
