Robotech Super Factory Satellite

Robotech Super Factory Satellite

The Robotech Super Factory Satellite began its life just like any other Factory Satellite, as an asteroid consisting mainly of iron, silicium, and some rare minerals such as titanium, molybdenum, and vanadium. However, the Super Factory Satellites were considerably larger and more advanced than the other Factory Satellites. The first prototype Super Factory Satellite, designated G-94, was launched in 1890, but it was not until the launch of the first production model, designated G-95, that the true capabilities of the design were discovered.

The G-94 Super Factory Satellite was the testbed of many of the technologies that would be incorporated into the G-95, however, it was still incomplete when it came under attack by one of the few remaining Zentraedi fleets controlled by the Disciples of Zor. The almost defenseless G-94 was totally unprepared for the attack and before it could activate its Fold Drive to escape, the satellite was destroyed. The G-95, completed in 1916, was designed with the size of the G-94, but with several new enhancements that the Robotech Masters believed would allow it to survive if it became involved in combat. These improvements included a powerful propulsion system, a wide array of defense weapons, and a powerful, sentient artificial intelligence known as Hypercomp.

Although all of the Factory Satellites relied on a powerful central computer to run most of the automated systems, they all maintained a Zentraedi crew to act as a backup to the computers and to ensure that production continued. As Dolza, the supreme commander of the Zentraedi, grew in power, the Robotech Masters began to fear that he might plan a rebellion against them. In an effort to rein in his power, the Robotech Masters had a new generation of Artificial Intelligences created. These AI's were powerful enough to run an entire Factory Satellite without any need of a crew, eliminating the need for Zentraedi to be located at every major production facility in the Tirolian Mercantile Empire. Hypercomp was the first successful AI created in this project, but the need to divert resources to other projects forced the Robotech Masters to cancel project after only two successful AI's were created: Hypercomp and the intelligence that would become known to the Humans as Eve. Hypercomp and the Super Factory Satellite were viewed as a complete success by the Robotech Masters, but other problems constantly forced them to delay their plans to build more Super Factory Satellites and to incorporate a new AI into each of the existing Factory Satellites.

Hypercomp was programmed with five main directives. First, keep the production lines operational. Second, defend against any enemies it encounters. Third, protect and aid the Robotech Masters whenever needed. Fourth, destroy or avoid any actively hostile enemy, such as the Disciples of Zor and the Invid. Fifth, follow the schedule of stops and arrivals in various star systems until a change in the schedule is made by the Robotech Masters. For nearly a century Hypercomp and the G-95 would follow all of its directives perfectly, but when Hypercomp learned of the death of Zor and the disappearance of his spaceship, it quickly surmised the fate of the Tirolian Mercantile Empire. As the years passed and Zor's ship was still not recovered, Hypercomp noticed the steady decline of the Zentraedi Armada, the one element that allowed the Tirolian Mercantile Empire to survive. Fewer and fewer ships would rendezvous with the satellite at the designated coordinates, it heard reports that some ships were simply abandoned after they lost power. Hypercomp's schedule had always been flexible, so it used what time it could spare to seek out many of these derelict ships to salvage parts, equipment, and what little Protoculture she could. However, it was not until 2011 CE that Hypercomp finally broke one of its directives.

As Dolza marshaled the Zentraedi armada to use against Earth and the Zentraedi Adoclas Main Fleet, he decided that it was time to make his move against the Robotech Masters as well. To this end, he decided that he needed to secure the G-95, one of the few Factory Satellites completely outside of his control. After being ordered by Dolza, Hypercomp decided that it would wait for confirmation of the order from the Robotech Masters, a step that was not necessary for orders that came from Dolza, however, when no such orders came, Hypercomp surmised that Dolza was acting outside of the authority of the Robotech Masters so it refused to go and simply ignored Dolza's order. Although Hypercomp had surmised the destruction of the Tirolian Mercantile Empire, it had not believed that it would occur so fast, of course it could not have predicted that the Zentraedi armada would have been destroyed in a single battle either. After 2011 CE, Hypercomp continued to follow her programmed schedule, but she did not encounter another Zentraedi or Tirolian ship. Hypercomp believed that returning to Tirol or contacting the Robotech Masters directly would compromise its safety, so it did nothing and continued on its schedule in hopes of meeting another ship. Through distress signals sent from other parts of the Tirolian Mercantile Empire, Hypercomp witnessed the Invid invasion of Tirol and the other planets at the core of the Empire. But Hypercomp refused to compromise her safety and altered her schedule to take her away from areas where the Invid forces were most active. By 2045 CE, Hypercomp was becoming desperate, the Protoculture reserves were beginning to run low and it could think of no decisions to make that would not compromise its own security. It was in this state of mind when it finally received a message, except it was not sent by the Robotech Masters, but by the leaders they had replaced, the Robotech Elders. The Robotech Elders ordered Hypercomp to Earth.

The Robotech Super Factory Satellite consists of a Main Body, holding the largest of the shipyards, as well as the main systems, the Protoculture Reactor, and the Fold Drive. Attached to the Main Body are four Factory Pods that hold the main mecha production plants and several shipyards each. A large, reinforced access stalk connects the Main Body to each of these Factory Pods. The Main Body has one entrance large enough to allow even a Tirolian Mother Ship (an Azashar Class General Purpose Vessel) access to the inside of the station. The main docking bay housed incoming vessels prior to assignment to a repair dock and newly constructed vessels in the final stages of their construction. All of the construction and repair bays located in the Main Body could be reached from this bay. There are similar docking bays located in the Factory Pods, but they are much smaller than the bay in the Main Body.

Unlike normal Factory Satellites, the Super Factory Satellite is quite capable of defending itself. Although Hypercomp avoids combat if necessary, it has a large assortment of defense drones and weapon systems to destroy even a large scale attack. Also unlike a normal Factory Satellite, the G-95 does not have a defense fleet that protects it at all time, the satellite travels alone.
