Sian Dereta Class Battle Fortress
(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 08/26/2005)
- Background information inspired by Sian
Dereta class Border Fleet battlefortress by Pieter Thomassen, on the
Unofficial Robotech Reference Guide.
In 1653, the Robotech Empire had expanded to such a size that supply lines to the outlying
territories, thinly populated with troops, but always under a greater threat than the inner
regions, had become cumbersome to maintain. In addition, although the communication equipment
allowed real-time contact with Tirol, the Zentraedi, and Triumviroid headquarters, there
lacked in 'on site' awareness. What was needed was a flexible, semi-autonomous combat force
capable of dealing with threats on the Empire's rim on its own or, at least, of sending a
warning and holding the line until reinforcements arrived.
Built to fulfill this need were Border Fleets. Unlike the regular Tirolian and Zentraedi fleets,
these fleets were made up of mixed Tirolian / Zentraedi crews, operating custom-designed ships
with a large amount of autonomy. The Triumviroids commanded the ships and Task Forces, while
clone forces provided a fast reaction force and Zentraedi troops provided the heavy troop
component. Because these forces had to operate in distant areas without the certainty of fast
reinforcements the troops were equipped with a qualitatively superior weapons mix compared to
the core imperial forces. For instance, the Zentraedi Border troops were equipped with seven
times the normal allotment of Glaug pods, and were also among the first units to receive
Quaedlunn-Rau power suits.
This qualitative edge also extended to the Border Fleet ship designs. The Border Fleet's largest
ship was designed as the Sian Dereta Class Battleship, but after the designers recognized that
its mission profile and outfit were different from all ship classes that had gone before the
designation was changed to the new 'battle fortress' category, incidentally effectively deleting
the battleship designation. As the first class to be so named, the Sian Dereta set the standard
for these ships, a standard that has become more and more the standard for all capital ships.
This includes Reflex Cannons as the main weapons, supported by an anti-ship cannon armament
heavier than a Queadol Magdmilla assault cruiser. The medium cannon and missile batteries were
as strong as the Thuverl Salan's, a ship almost half again as long as the Sian Dereta.
The first Border Fleet ships were converted Zentraedi vessels, and the first Sian Dereta prototype
entered service around 1680. The Sian Dereta served with the Border Fleet as the local flagship,
usually leading a task force of Seron Thoun Battle Cruisers and a number of Tou Redir scout
vessels (and later, Tou Salaam Class Exploration Cruisers), all accompanied by one or two Quiltra
Queleual vessels in the supply configuration. These task forces each patrolled their area of the
Empire's border sectors, scouting for threats and providing the presence of the Tirolian Empire.
With an average of one Sian Dereta and five Seron Thoun ships in each task force, the battle
groups were highly potent, numbering an average of seven Reflex cannons between them. In addition
to the larger than usual amount of anti-ship weapons this gave the task forces the firepower
equivalent of several Zentraedi battle groups of equal size. However, while the troops stationed
on the ships were fast and hard-hitting, they were not as numerous as those on regular Zentraedi
ships, and thus the Border Fleets were limited frontier patrol duties and fast strike missions
only. Conquest and large scale policing were not part of the Border Fleet tasks and were
relegated to the main Zentraedi forces. This ship and troop make up of the Border Fleets,
combined with the close Tirolian supervision through the Triumviroid commanders, made such a task
force ideal for special forces duties, and the Tirolian fleet command appropriated several Sian
Dereta and Seron Thoun groups after construction and employed them as such, though never
exceeding 97 such task forces.
The Sian Dereta class was designed specifically for the demands of the Border Fleets. As such,
the design differed considerably form the Zentraedi refits that had, to that time, made up the
bulk of the Border Fleet strength. A primary difference with ships such as the Queadol Magdmilla
was, for instance, the provision for a mostly Tirolian crew, with the Zentraedi giving troop and
heavy labor duties labor only. Of course, due to their bulk, the Tirolian living spaces were
still considerably smaller than those for the Zentraedi. This had still considerable effects on
the design. Furthermore, the whole emphasis of the vessels was shifted from general duty police
and space control to anti-ship and planetary bombardment tasks, in addition to greatly improved
sensor performance. Moreover, great attention was given to prolonged deployments without, or
with only minimal, support from faraway home bases.
As with all Zentraedi Reflex cannon ships, the front section of the Sian Dereta composed the
main armament. The class was unique in carrying a double Reflex cannon, rather than a single.
This was not done to improve firepower, as the power plant could not recharge the two cannons
simultaneously, but because these ships were to operate farther away from support forces and
structures. The second cannon then was carried to reduce wear and tear and for redundancy.
However, the advantages of this 'spare cannon' proved to be so small in relation to material
effort of building and operating the weapon that in the successor class, the Sian Macross, the
double cannon was deleted and a single cannon carried once again. The lower levels of the
cannon booms carried the Zentraedi mecha hangars and some personnel quarters, with launch bays
opening on the open bay in the middle of the booms.
The center section of the ship was the main structural member. The dorsal carried the Tirolian
command citadel, a cylindrical structure lying on the hull, tipped aft by one of the secondary
engines. The upper levels of the main section proper were dedicated to the Tirolian crew
quarters and support systems, followed by two large and deep decks for part of the Zentraedi
complement. On these levels was also the fold system hold. The lower levels were hangar decks
for the smaller ships, almost exclusively Tirolian Assault Corvettes, though some Zentraedi
shuttles and drone mining craft were also carried. A large closeable ventral hatch in the
center of the main section served the hangar decks.
Flanking the main section were the two engine sections, which continued with the engines proper
aft of the main section. The forward parts of the engine sections housed in their upper levels
the various large installations such as the fabrication equipment and fuel purifiers. The
center levels housed the Reflex furnaces and heavy engineering equipment, while the forward
lower levels housed the Tirolian troops (with launch chutes for the Bioroid mecha). Aft of
these primary engineering spaces were the reaction engines proper. Spread throughout the ship
was the reaction mass tanks for the ship and attached craft and mecha.
The Sian Dereta's engine sections were typical of older Border Fleet designs, and were flanked
by outrider bodies with the more sensitive sensor equipment. Apart from isolating these sensors
from the ship proper, these sections also covered the main engineering spaces from flank
attacks. The sensors mounted were rudimentary fold sensors and very sensitive EM sensor arrays.
Additional sensor booms at the tip of the cannon booms supported these.
The Sian Dereta carried a heavy armament. Apart from the double Reflex cannons already
mentioned, the ships mounted eight heavy particle cannons, more than the larger Queadol
Magdomilla assault cruiser. These cannons were located in the tip of the cannon booms, in
elevating mounts on top of the cannon booms, and in blisters above and below the main reaction
engines. This meant that usually five or six heavy cannons could be brought to bear on an
enemy ship, given the customary Tirolian tactic of pointing the ship at the enemy to deny him
a large target area. Consequently, the ventral engine cannons were relatively useless, and in
the successor design, the Sian Macross, these cannons were moved to the upper forward deck.
The medium and missile defense batteries were as heavy as those on Zentraedi ships half again
the Sian Dereta's size. All this weaponry had its price, of course. The torpedo armament was
minimal, certainly compared to what Zentraedi ships carried, but the heavy cannon armament
compensated for this. The troop capability was reduced even more, but this too was acceptable
as the Border Fleet was not intended to assault or police planets.
The Sian Dereta continued in series production for near two centuries, with an estimated
80,000 vessels of the class built. In the final years of the 19th century, the Border Fleets
were at strength, and attrition could be met for the foreseeable future by ships then under
refit and repair, and by replacing losses with Seron Thoun craft on a temporary basis. Due
to the independent nature of the Sian Dereta, it was not until about a century later that
the class was becoming a thinly spread design whose replacement parts were no longer in
production and whose stocks were dwindling. Rather than rebuilding the production lines, a
new and updated design, the Sian Macross, was prepared and construction begun on prototypes,
with the goal of replacing the Sian Dereta on a one-to-one basis over the next five to seven
decades. However, protoculture depletion and the disaster regarding Zor made this plan
impossible. The Sian Deretas, like all Tirolian ships, gradually lost power in the first two
decades of the 21st century, and were destroyed outright or stranded in place at their
distant postings.

Notes:
| * |
Destroying the command tower will destroy the command bridge, but the auxiliary command bridge
will remain functional. |
| ** |
Destroying the main engines will severely impair the ship, forcing it to rely on its auxiliary
engine. Reduce atmospheric speed by half and rate of acceleration in space by 75%. |
| *** |
If both the main and auxiliary engines are put out of commission, the ship will be floating
dead in space or will crash if the damage occurs in atmosphere. if the main engines are
undamaged, the loss of the auxiliary engines will not impair the ship in any way. |
| **** |
Depleting the M.D.C. of the forward third of the ship will destroy the Heavy Particle
Cannons and the hangers for the Zentraedi mecha. Depleting the M.D.C. the rear section
of the ship will destroy the command bridge and the auxiliary command bridge. It will also
shut down the entire ship, including life support, stasis, gravity control, communications,
weapons, and both engines. |
Speed:
- Fold Drive: Uses a Fold Drive with a maximum speed of 10 light-years per hour. The ship's
navigational equipment cannot safely execute a fold jump of distances greater than 1 kiloparsec
(3260 light-years) and it can only be activated once per hour.

Weapon Systems:
- Heavy Reflex Cannon
Unique among all Tirolian ships, the Sian Dereta battle fortress sported two heavy reflex cannons, the
most powerful weapon every deployed by the Tirolian Mercantile Empire. The two cannons are mounted on
the front of the ship and dominate the forward half of the ship. The cannons each need four full
minutes to power up their enormous capacitors before they is ready to fire. The beam itself will last
for one full melee and then the capacitors can begin recharging again. The cannons' strength is
equivalent to 30 MT (megatons) of TNT. See Tirolian Ship
Systems for more details on Heavy Reflex Cannons.
- Range: 100 miles (160.9 km) underwater, 200 miles (321.9 km) through an atmosphere, and
200,000 miles (321,869 km) in space.
- Damage: 3D4x500,000 M.D. per single blast.
- Blast Radius: The cannon's beam width is 1250' (381 m) and when used against a planet, it
leaves a crater with a diameter of 30,000' (9144 m) and a depth of 3000' (914.4 m).

Special Systems:
- Missile Storage
The ship has storage for a large number of missiles used by all Border Fleet ships. Fully loaded,
the ship holds 30,000 SAA-1 Granite (Gliquoun Touwhaug) Long Range Missiles, 1500 SSA-1 Sniper
(Lojredbeth Deuawhaug) Cruise Missiles, and 1500 SSA-2 Scrapper (Letkes Deuawhaug) Cruise Missiles.
These can be transferred to other Zentraedi ships to reload their missile supplies or they can be
used to reload the ship's own missile launchers. Transferring missiles to another ship takes about
ten minutes for every 50 missiles transferred. Reloading the ship's missile racks takes about 1
melee round to completely reload one missile launcher and up to 10 launchers can be reloaded
simultaneously.
- Weapon Production Facilities
The ship contains basic weapon construction facilities. There is a single factory aboard the
ship and it is dedicated to producing armor and infantry weapons. At normal production, the
factory can produce 75 suits of Zentraedi-sized armor of any type, 100 suits of Tirolian-sized
armor of any type, 100 Zentraedi-sized infantry weapons of any type, and 100 Tirolian-sized
infantry weapons of any type per week. Double rate of production if the factory is at maximum
production, but for every month the factory is at maximum production there is a cumulative 5%
chance that the factory will fail and must be repaired at a shipyard.
Standard Systems:
- Life Support System
The ship has a fully operational life support system that provides fresh atmosphere throughout the ship. The
life support system can sustain a maximum of 3000 people indefinitely or 10,000 people for a short period
of time in case of an emergency.
- Communication Systems
The ship is equipped with four communication systems. The first is a long range laser system with a maximum
range of 100,000 miles (160,934 km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but they rely on line
of sight, so it cannot communicate with a ship that is on the other side of a solid object. The second system
is a long range radio system with a maximum range of 50,000 miles (80,467 km), the transmissions travel at
the speed of light, but they are easy to intercept and jam. The third system is a satellite relay system that
allows the ship to boost the range of the other communication systems indefinitely by using satellites or
other ships to relay the transmission. The forth system is a Hyperspace Communications Relay, which travels
at a rate of one light-year every 5 seconds. Hyperspace communications can travel through planets and other
obstructions unhindered, are extremely difficult to intercept, and impossible to jam. The ship's communication
array can contact with up to 2000 ships simultaneously.
- Sensor Systems
The ship is equipped with four sensor systems. The first is the Electromagnetic Detection Equipment that
detects other sensor systems at twice the maximum range of their transmitter. The second is a powerful array
that uses standard radar waves, which are fairly easy to jam, but it is obvious when the radar array is
being jammed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 900,000 miles (1,448,410 km), small
targets at a range of up to 9 million miles (14.5 million km), medium targets at a range of up to 18 million
miles (29 million km), and large targets at a range of up to 27 million miles (43.5 million miles). The
third is a Subspace Mass Sensor that uses gravity-based technology to detect target's at real time speed.
The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 1.5 million miles (2.4 million km), small targets at a
range of up to 15 million miles (24.1 million km), medium targets at a range of up to 30 million miles (48.3
million km), and large targets at a range of up to 45 million miles (72.4 million miles). The forth is a
Hyperspace Mass Sensor that can detect and track ships that are using a Fold Drive. The sensor can track
tiny targets at a range of up to 6 parsecs (19.56 light-years), small targets at a range of up to 30 parsecs
(97.8 light-years), medium targets at a range of up to 60 parsecs (195.6 light-years), and large targets at
a range of up to 90 parsecs (293.4 light-years). See Tirolian
Ship Systems for more details on sensor systems.
- Targeting Computer System
Connecting the ship's sensor systems with the weapon systems is the Targeting Computer System. The
system is designed to control all of the weapons currently equipped on the ship. This system can
track up to 300 targets simultaneously, providing detailed information about the targets from the
ships data files. All direct fire weapons receive a bonus of +5 to strike and missiles using
non-autonomous guidance systems receive a bonus of +3 to strike. These bonuses are in addition to
any previously stated bonuses or penalties.
Combat Summary:
- Combat Actions: 6
- Strike: +5 to strike for all direct fire weapons and +3 to strike for all missiles using
non-autonomous guidance systems.
- Targeting System: Can track up to 300 targets simultaneously.
