Seron Thoun Class Battlecruiser
(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 08/26/2005)
- Background information inspired by Seron
Thoun class Border Fleet battlecruiser by Pieter Thomassen, on the
Unofficial Robotech Reference Guide.
Fifty years after the first Sian Dereta was commissioned, the first dedicated Border Fleet battle
cruisers entered service. The Seron Thoun class ships were designed to complement the Sian Dereta
class, one of which was to form the nucleus of a Border Fleet battle group, typically comprising
of five Seron Thoun vessels. As with the Sian Dereta, the Seron Thoun was a qualitatively excellent
vessel with heavy firepower and a very powerful sensor array. The lack of a large quantity of
troops and torpedo armament made the ships, as designed, unsuitable for the police and conquest
tasks of the regular Zentraedi, but this was not their designed function. In addition, hundreds of
these ships were assigned to Tirolian Special Forces groups rather than to the Border Fleets.
Like its larger siblings, the Seron Thoun is a design well suited for conversion into a human-sized
manned capital ship. In place of the Zentraedi and Bioroid troops, a full division of Human troops
could be carried, in addition to expanded naval mecha numbers. There must be thousands of stranded,
undamaged Seron Thoun vessels spread in the old fringe regions of the empire, and reconstituting and
converting such a vessel would be an economically viable prospect for the poorer races. No suitable
Seron Thoun has been found, so far, and no race has announced any plans for active salvage
operations.
The Seron Thoun class is designed to be the backbone of the Border Fleets of the Tirolian Mercantile
Empire. While the large Sian Dereta class carried heavier armaments and was in general more capable,
it also was an expensive design to produce, and another vessel, cheaper to produce in large numbers,
was required to man the borders. The result was the Seron Thoun. On first sight, the Seron Thoun
resembles a cross between half a Sian Dereta and a Nupetiet Vergnitzs flagship. The resemblance with
the Sian Dereta is caused by the use of a nearly identical Reflex cannon, which accounts for nearly
half the length of the ship. A main thruster dominates the slightly bulging aft section, the same
segmented multi-reaction plate design also used in the Nupetiet Vergnitzs flagship and in many Invid
mecha. Two outrigger bodies and a command citadel reinforce the likeness of the Sian Dereta. As with
the larger ship, these are sensor mounts and Tirolian command centers respectively, and the outrigger
sensors protect the center body from flanking attacks. Two large disc shaped low frequency radar
transmitters are mounted on the hangar abaft the ventral cannon boom. Three more large antennas are
mounted in front of the cannon boom.
A Tirolian command citadel tops the Seron Thoun, and like the Sian Dereta the Seron Thoun has a mixed
crew. Underneath the command center are the barracks for the Tirolian crew. The Zentraedi forces are
located in the dorsal and ventral bulges of the main cannon boom, and in one large hold in the center
hull. The Zentraedi mecha and the lesser craft are placed in a hangar bay in the aft ventral of the
cannon boom; the Bioroid forces launch from a hold in the center of the hull, under the Tirolian crew
quarters. The engineering spaces were located forward of the engine and aft of the main hangar,
flanked by the outriggers.
All Border Fleet ships carried a heavy cannon armament at the cost of torpedo tubes and troop
capacity. Apart from the Reflex cannon, the Seron Thouns carried five large anti-ship particle
cannons, more than the Thuverl Salan Class Heavy Cruiser. They were mounted in a chin mount on the
ventral of the cannon boom, in one dorsal cannon boom mount and in an elevating mount in front of
the command citadel, and two in, uniquely, the connecting structures with the outrigger bodies.
Unlike the Sian Dereta, all these weapons could be brought to bear on the forward arc, where Tirolian
tactics placed the heaviest emphasis. Consequently, the Seron Thoun had about the equivalent anti-ship
firepower of the larger Sian Dereta class. The ships also carried a complement of particle beam
turrets rather large for a ship of their size, and the standard anti-mecha and anti-missile missile
turrets. As stated, the torpedo armament was minimal, though this did not really matter with the large
cannon armament. The Bioroid and Zentraedi troop contingents were pared to the bone, although the
Border Fleets did receive qualitatively superior personnel and mecha.
From 1730 through 1969 the Tirolian Mercantile Empire produced almost 400,000 Seron Thoun vessels
and production ceased because the Border Fleets were at their authorized strengths (for the
shrinking empire), not so much because of any obsolescence of the design. This does not mean that
the Seron Thoun was not getting 'long in the teeth', as the saying goes, and a design effort for
a successor was already under way. This new vessel would have been the complement battle group
member to the new Sian Macross class, but construction of the Seron Ameg, as the project was named,
never reached the prototype stage before the collapse of the Tirolian Mercantile Empire. The Seron
Ameg was in effect a smaller version of the Sian Macross, and the first non-Tirolian Home Fleet
vessel to be equipped with the new Reflex cannon technology, which no longer required a boom design.
As with all Tirolian ships, save the core fleet of the Robotech Masters, the Seron Thouns lost power
to protoculture depletion in the first decades of this century, stranding the ships in the border
regions or making them easy targets for hostile forces such as the Invid and other inimical alien
forces.

Notes:
| * |
Destroying the command tower will destroy the command bridge, but the auxiliary command bridge
will remain functional. |
| ** |
Destroying the main engines will severely impair the ship, forcing it to rely on its auxiliary
engine. Reduce atmospheric speed by half and rate of acceleration in space by 75%. |
| *** |
If both the main and auxiliary engines are put out of commission, the ship will be floating
dead in space or will crash if the damage occurs in atmosphere. if the main engines are
undamaged, the loss of the auxiliary engines will not impair the ship in any way. |
| **** |
Depleting the M.D.C. of the forward third of the ship will destroy the Heavy Particle
Cannon and the hangers for the Zentraedi mecha. Depleting the M.D.C. the rear section
of the ship will destroy the command bridge and the auxiliary command bridge. It will also
shut down the entire ship, including life support, stasis, gravity control, communications,
weapons, and both engines. |
Speed:
- Fold Drive: Uses a Fold Drive with a maximum speed of 10 light-years per hour. The ship's
navigational equipment cannot safely execute a fold jump of distances greater than 1 kiloparsec
(3260 light-years) and it can only be activated once per hour.
- Sublight: Can travel at up to 20 percent of the speed of light (0.20c) and accelerate /
decelerate at a rate of 0.17 percent of light (0.0017 c) per melee.
- Atmospheric Propulsion: Uses an anti-gravity drive that has a maximum cruise speed is 350
mph (563.3 km/h) and can enter and leave an atmosphere with Earth-like gravity.
- Maximum Range: Effectively unlimited by drive system, but onboard supplies for the crew
and troops will last for 2.5 years before the ship needs to be restocked. Water stores were
recycled almost completely.
Statistical Data:
- Height: 1204' (367 m)
- Width: 1024' (312 m)
- Length: 4564' or 0.86 miles (1391 m or 1.4 km)
- Weight: 32 million tons (29 million metric tons)
- Reactor System: Tirolian Protoculture Reactor with a life span of 35 years.
- Propulsion System: Anti-Gravity / Chemical Drive
- Gravity System: Internal
- Cargo: Limited
Weapon Systems:
- Heavy Reflex Cannon
The main weapon of the ship is one of the most powerful Reflex Cannons deployed by the Tirolian Border
Fleet. The cannon is mounted on the front of the ship and dominates the forward half of the ship. The
cannon needs four full minutes to power up its enormous capacitors before it is ready to fire. The
beam itself will last for one full melee and then the capacitors can begin recharging again. The
cannon's strength is equivalent to 15 MT (megatons) of TNT. See
Tirolian Ship Systems for more details on Heavy Reflex
Cannons.
- Range: 100 miles (160.9 km) underwater, 200 miles (321.9 km) through an atmosphere, and
200,000 miles (321,869 km) in space.
- Damage: 3D4x250,000 M.D. per single blast.
- Blast Radius: The cannon's beam width is 625' (190.5 m) and when used against a planet, it
leaves a crater with a diameter of 15,000' (4572 m) and a depth of 1500' (457.2 m).
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 100
- Rate of Fire: The cannon can fire once every eight minutes, but can fire no more then five
times per hour.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- Retractable Particle Beam Cannons (5)
Scattered across the hull of the ship are powerful anti-ship particle beam cannons, the cannons
stand ready to pop out from under their sliding hatches to attack. Each turret is capable of 360
degrees of rotation with an arc of fire of 180 degrees. One cannon is located on the top of the
ship, two cannons are located on each side of the ship, and one cannon is located on the bottom
of the ship.
- Range: 100 miles (160.9 km) underwater, 200 miles (321.9 km) through an atmosphere,
and 200,000 miles (321,869 km) in space.
- Damage: 2D4x100 M.D. per single blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 24
- Rate of Fire: Each cannon can fire twice per melee.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- Retractable Laser Turrets (48)
The Lasers Turrets are located in batteries along the all sides of ships and are used as
anti-mecha and small anti-ship weapons. They are not very powerful, but if fired in large
numbers they can be devastating. Eight turrets are located on the top of the ship, ten
turrets are located on each side of the ship, six turrets are located on the bottom of
the ship, and fourteen turrets are on the front of the ship.
- Range: 1584' (956.6 m) underwater, 3168' (956.6 m) through an atmosphere, and

volley of at least three cannons.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- Retractable Long Range Missile Turrets (24)
These are very similar to the Retractable Laser Turrets, except they fire missiles instead of
laser beams. They can use several different types of warheads according to the mission at
hand, but they are usually configured to be anti-spaceship missiles with the heaviest warheads
available. Six turrets are located on the top of the ship, seven turrets are located on the
each side of the ship, and four turrets are located on the bottom of the ship.

Special Systems:
- Missile Storage
The ship has storage for a large number of missiles used by all Border Fleet ships. Fully loaded,
the ship holds 20,000 SAA-1 Granite (Gliquoun Touwhaug) Long Range Missiles, 1000 SSA-1 Sniper
(Lojredbeth Deuawhaug) Cruise Missiles, and 1000 SSA-2 Scrapper (Letkes Deuawhaug) Cruise Missiles.
These can be transferred to other Zentraedi ships to reload their missile supplies or they can be
used to reload the ship's own missile launchers. Transferring missiles to another ship takes about
ten minutes for every 50 missiles transferred. Reloading the ship's missile racks takes about 1
melee round to completely reload one missile launcher and up to 8 launchers can be reloaded
simultaneously.
- Weapon Production Facilities
The ship contains basic weapon construction facilities. There is a single factory aboard the
ship and it is dedicated to producing armor and infantry weapons. At normal production, the
factory can produce 50 suits of armor of any type and 100 infantry weapons of any type per
week. Double rate of production if the factory is at maximum production, but for every month
the factory is at maximum production there is a cumulative 5% chance that the factory will
fail and must be repaired at a shipyard.
Standard Systems:
- Life Support System
The ship has a fully operational life support system that provides fresh atmosphere throughout the
ship. The life support system can sustain a maximum of 2400 people indefinitely or 8000 people for
a short period of time in case of an emergency.
- Communication Systems
The ship is equipped with four communication systems. The first is a long range laser system with a
maximum range of 100,000 miles (160,934 km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but
they rely on line of sight, so it cannot communicate with a ship that is on the other side of a solid
object. The second system is a long range radio system with a maximum range of 50,000 miles (80,467
km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but they are easy to intercept and jam. The third
system is a satellite relay system that allows the ship to boost the range of the other communication
systems indefinitely by using satellites or other ships to relay the transmission. The forth system is
a Hyperspace Communications Relay, which travels at a rate of one light-year every 5 seconds.
Hyperspace communications can travel through planets and other obstructions unhindered, are extremely
difficult to intercept, and impossible to jam. The ship's communication array can contact with up to
1200 ships simultaneously.
- Sensor Systems
The ship is equipped with four sensor systems. The first is the Electromagnetic Detection Equipment
that detects other sensor systems at twice the maximum range of their transmitter. The second is a
powerful array that uses standard radar waves, which are fairly easy to jam, but it is obvious when
the radar array is being jammed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 750,000 miles
(1,207,008 km), small targets at a range of up to 7.5 million miles (12.1 million km), medium
targets at a range of up to 15 million miles (24.1 million km), and large targets at a range of up
to 22.5 million miles (36.2 million miles). The third is a Subspace Mass Sensor that uses
gravity-based technology to detect target's at real time speed. The sensor can track tiny targets at
a range of up to 1 million miles (1.6 million km), small targets at a range of up to 10 million miles
(16.1 million km), medium targets at a range of up to 20 million miles (32.2 million km), and large
targets at a range of up to 30 million miles (48.3 million miles). The forth is a Huperspace Mass
Sensor that can detect and track ships that are using a Fold Drive. The sensor can track tiny targets
at a range of up to 4 parsecs (13.04 light-years), small targets at a range of up to 20 parsecs (65.2
light-years), medium targets at a range of up to 40 parsecs (130.4 light-years), and large targets at
a range of up to 60 parsecs (195.6 light-years). See
Tirolian Ship Systems for more details on sensor
systems.
- Targeting Computer System
Connecting the ship's sensor systems with the weapon systems is the Targeting Computer System. The
system is designed to control all of the weapons currently equipped on the ship. This system can
track up to 200 targets simultaneously, providing detailed information about the targets from the
ships data files. All direct fire weapons receive a bonus of +4 to strike and missiles using
non-autonomous guidance systems receive a bonus of +3 to strike. These bonuses are in addition to
any previously stated bonuses or penalties.
Combat Summary:
- Combat Actions: 5
- Strike: +4 to strike for all direct fire weapons and +3 to strike for all missiles using
non-autonomous guidance systems.
- Targeting System: Can track up to 200 targets simultaneously.
