Quiltra Draenitzs Class Multipurpose Transport
(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 12/11/2004)
- Background information inspired by Quiltra
Draenitzs class Tirolian multipurpose transport by Pieter Thomassen, with Peter Walker and Rob Morgenstern,
on the Unofficial Robotech Reference
Guide.
The Quiltra Draenitzs transport vessel is the Tirolian workhorse for all manner of tasks ranging from large-scale
troop movements and fleet tender duties to ore carrier, much in the same way as the Quiltra Queleual served in
the Zentraedi fleets. The Draenitsz was mainly designed to serve as an ore carrier for the asteroid mining
operations that served the Tirolian economy, but given the required characteristics, a multipurpose capability
was designed into the class so that they could serve as general supply vessels, mecha carriers, and tenders for
the Tirolian fleet if needed. As such, a point-defense battery was included from the first design.
Overall, the Quiltra Draenitsz design was a success; it had a large cargo capacity and was easily adaptable to
other tasks. The class started series production in the mid-17th century and remained in production for over
three centuries, supplementing older designs at first, replacing them as time went by. The effectiveness of the
Draenitsz was such that at the time of the downfall of the Tirolian Mercantile Empire, no successor was in sight
or even under consideration.
In the Second Robotech War the Draenitsz played a minor role in the Tirolian naval attacks, as this war was
fought mostly at short range. On some of the ranged raids made by the Tirolian forces, the Draenitsz vessels
went with the combat forces in the role of tankers and tenders. Once, a clandestine landing operation was made
with a Draenitsz vessel acting as a survey and recovery vessel. But overall, the Draenitsz class was of little
importance in the war.
Designed as a general cargo vessel, the Quiltra Draenitzs is not a ship likely to gain a prize for elegance of
design. Odd corners, projections and hull fixtures dot the entire surface, creating the (mistaken) impression
of a ship created by slapping several unrelated hulls and parts of ship together into one craft. Spread out over
the hull is the defensive cannons. The Quiltra Draenitzs has a main hull shaped like a tapering rectangular box,
with the smallest side vertical and the longest side in the longitudinal direction of the ship. From amidships
aft, a massive superstructure sits on the upper deck. The tall command tower points upwards from near the center
of the weather deck, while to the sides and the aft a lower superstructure extends, flowing smoothly in the
lower hull near the engine. Four large external docking arms project to the flanks from the forward part of the
superstructure. These arms are built to connect to asteroids (or the extraction machinery on them) and allow the
vessel to dock with even the most irregular formed rocks. Seven distinctive Tirolian docking and embarkation
ports can be seen on the hull, three almost directly aft of the bow (one forward and one for the dorsal and
ventral each), with two more ports on each flank forward and under the command tower.
Internally, there are three sections distinguishable in the ship. The command tower houses the living and work
spaces for the Tirolian crew, while the majority of the main hull consists of cargo holds and access bays. The
holds can be reconfigured to serve as mecha bays, fuel tanks, or evacuation quarters. The third section is the
aft engineering section, housing the generators and main engine.
These ships were built at the Tirolian Orbital Shipyards and the Cirtzsai Yards from 1662 through 1994. From
the beginning of the production run till its end, no major upgrades were made to the Quiltra Draenitzs design,
save replacing obsolete equipment with more modern equivalents. The total number of Quiltra Draenitzs class
transports constructed is 9693. Of this number, 625 were destroyed prior to 2010. Due to protoculture
depletion and the mostly non-military nature of the class, only 98 remained in service in 2013, the others
mostly placed in long-term orbital storage in the systems they worked prior to the energy crisis. Of the
operational vessels, 9 arrived with the Tirolian Fleet in the Sol System, the others having been abandoned in
a deep-space depot with many other depleted ships. This depot has to this date not been found. After the heavy
fighting of the Second Robotech War, no operational Quiltra Draenitzs transports remained. Several captured
vessels were placed on the surface of the moon near the Moon Base, but were destroyed when the Invid arrived
in Earth orbit.

Notes:
| * |
Destroying the main engines will severely impair the ship, forcing it to rely on its auxiliary
engine. Reduce atmospheric speed by half and rate of acceleration in space by 75%. |
| ** |
If both the main and auxiliary engines are put out of commission, the ship will be floating dead in
space or will crash if the damage occurs in atmosphere. if the main engines are undamaged, the loss
of the auxiliary engines will not impair the ship in any way. |
| *** |
Depleting the M.D.C. of the main body will shut down the entire ship, including life support, gravity
control, communications, weapons, and engines. The command bridge will also be destroyed. |
Speed:
- Fold Drive: Uses a Fold Drive with a maximum speed of 10 light-years per hour. The ship's navigational
equipment cannot safely execute a fold jump of distances greater than 1 kiloparsec (3260 light-years) and it
can only be activated once per hour.
- Sublight: Can travel at up to 20 percent of the speed of light (0.20c) and accelerate / decelerate at
a rate of 0.15 percent of light (0.0015 c) per melee.
- Atmospheric Propulsion: Uses an anti-gravity drive that has a maximum cruise speed is Mach 2 (1490
mph / 2400 km/h) and can enter and leave an atmosphere with Earth-like gravity.
- Maximum Range: Effectively unlimited by drive system, but onboard supplies for the crew and troops
will last for 12 months before the ship needs to be restocked. Water stores were recycled almost
completely.
Statistical Data:
- Height: 978' (298 m)
- Width: 656' (200 m)
- Length: 1673' (510 m)
- Weight: 1.34 million tons (1.22 million metric tons)
- Reactor System: Tirolian Protoculture Reactor with a life span of 35 years.

- Cargo: The ship has several cargo holds that can carry the up to a maximum of 430,000 tons
(390,000 metric tons).
Weapon Systems:
- Retractable Particle Beam Cannons (40)
Scattered across the hull of every Tirolian warship, the Particle Beam Cannons stand ready to pop out from
under their sliding hatches to attack. Each turret is capable of 360 degrees of rotation with an arc of
fire of 180 degrees. Seven cannons are located on the top of the ship, ten cannons are located on each
side of the ship, six cannons are located on the bottom of the ship, and seven cannons are located on the
front of the ship.
- Range: 100 miles (160.9 km) underwater, 200 miles (321.9 km) through an atmosphere, and
200,000 miles (321,869 km) in space.
- Damage: 2D4x100 M.D. per single blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 24
- Rate of Fire: Each cannon can fire twice per melee.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- Retractable Laser Turrets (120)
The Lasers Turrets are located in batteries along the front and side of all Tirolian ships. They are not
very powerful, but if fired in large numbers they can be devastating. They are primarily used against
enemy fighters that are attacking the ship. 25 turrets are located on the top of the ship, 30 turrets
are located on each side of the ship, 15 turrets are located on the bottom of the ship, and 20 turrets
are on the front of the ship.
- Range: 1584' (956.6 m) underwater, 3168' (956.6 m) through an atmosphere, and 60 miles
(96.6 km) in space.
- Damage: 2D6x10 M.D. per single blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 23
- Rate of Fire: Each cannon can fire four times per melee, but they must fire in a volley of at
least three cannons.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
Shield Systems:
- Hexagonal Force Fields (15)
The ship can create fifteen hexagonal force fields at any point around the ship to protect
it from incoming attacks. Once placed, the fields cannot be moved until the next melee round,
but they can be taken down and replaced by an inactive shield between each volley against the
ship. There are enough hexagons so that the entire ship can be covered with five hexagons
remaining inactive. Damage in excess of what an individual field can sustain if caused by a
beam or projectile weapon will cause damage to the ship, but excess damage from a missile or
a missile volley will be completely deflected. Each field regenerates at a rate of 50 M.D.C.
per minute while active and 100 M.D.C. per melee round while inactive.
- M.D.C.: 1000 each
Special Systems:
- Missile Production Facilities
The ship contains basic missile construction facilities. There is a single factory aboard the ship and it
is designed to be generic and can construct any Tirolian missile. At normal production, the factory can
produce 100 short range missiles, 25 medium range missiles, 5 long range missiles, or 1 cruise missile
per week. It takes one week to retool a factory from producing one missile type to a different missile
type. Double rate of production if a factory is at maximum production, but for every month the factory is
at maximum production there is a cumulative 5% chance that the factory will fail and must be repaired at
a shipyard or an Azashar Class General Purpose Vessel. The construction of a missile includes all
guidance systems and warheads, although no reflex warheads can be built.
- Weapon Production Facilities
The ship contains basic weapon construction facilities. There is a single factory aboard the ship and it
is dedicated to producing armor and infantry weapons. At normal production, the factory can produce 20
suits of armor of any type and 50 infantry weapons of any type per week. Double rate of production if
the factory is at maximum production, but for every month the factory is at maximum production there is
a cumulative 5% chance that the factory will fail and must be repaired at a shipyard or an Azashar Class
General Purpose Vessel.
Standard Systems:
- Life Support System
The ship has a fully operational life support system that provides fresh atmosphere throughout the ship.
The life support system can sustain a maximum of 1000 people indefinitely or 2000 people for a short
period of time in case of an emergency.
- Communication Systems
The ship is equipped with four communication systems. The first is a long range laser system with a maximum
range of 100,000 miles (160,934 km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but they rely on line
of sight, so it cannot communicate with a ship that is on the other side of a solid object. The second system
is a long range radio system with a maximum range of 50,000 miles (80,467 km), the transmissions travel at
the speed of light, but they are easy to intercept and jam. The third system is a satellite relay system that
allows the ship to boost the range of the other communication systems indefinitely by using satellites or
other ships to relay the transmission. The forth system is a Hyperspace Communications Relay, which travels
at a rate of one light-year every 5 seconds. Hyperspace communications can travel through planets and other
obstructions unhindered, are extremely difficult to intercept, and impossible to jam. The ship's communication
array can contact with up to 1500 ships simultaneously.
- Sensor Systems
The ship is equipped with four sensor systems. The first is the Electromagnetic Detection Equipment
that detects other sensor systems at twice the maximum range of their transmitter. The second is a
powerful array that uses standard radar waves, which are fairly easy to jam, but it is obvious when
the radar array is being jammed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 750,000 miles
(1,207,008 km), small targets at a range of up to 7.5 million miles (12.1 million km), medium
targets at a range of up to 15 million miles (24.1 million km), and large targets at a range of up
to 22.5 million miles (36.2 million miles). The third is a Subspace Mass Sensor that uses
gravity-based technology to detect target's at real time speed. The sensor can track tiny targets at
a range of up to 1 million miles (1.6 million km), small targets at a range of up to 10 million miles
(16.1 million km), medium targets at a range of up to 20 million miles (32.2 million km), and large
targets at a range of up to 30 million miles (48.3 million miles). The forth is a Huperspace Mass
Sensor that can detect and track ships that are using a Fold Drive. The sensor can track tiny targets
at a range of up to 4 parsecs (13.04 light-years), small targets at a range of up to 20 parsecs (65.2
light-years), medium targets at a range of up to 40 parsecs (130.4 light-years), and large targets at
a range of up to 60 parsecs (195.6 light-years). See
Tirolian Ship Systems for more details on sensor
systems.
- Targeting Computer System
Connecting the ship's sensor systems with the weapon systems is the Targeting Computer System. The system
is designed to control all of the weapons currently equipped on the ship. This system can track up to
150 targets simultaneously, providing detailed information about the targets from the ships data files.
All direct fire weapons receive a bonus of +3 to strike and all missile weapons receive a bonus of +2 to
strike. These bonuses are in addition to any previously stated bonuses or penalties.
Combat Summary:
- Combat Actions: 4
- Strike: +3 to strike with direct fire weapons and +2 to strike with missile weapons.
- Targeting System: Can track up to 150 targets simultaneously.
