Robotech Space Factory
(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 08/29/2006)
- Background information inspired by Zentraedi
Factory Satellite by Pieter Thomassen, with Peter Walker, on the
Unofficial Robotech Reference Guide.
All Robotech Factory Satellites began their lives as an asteroid consisting mainly of
iron, silicium, and some rare minerals such as titanium, molybdenum, and vanadium. In
1760, the first Factory Satellite was finished and began replacing the normal
shipyards that the Robotech Elders used to maintain their fleets. Soon after, the
Robotech Elders decided to concentrate nearly all production of Zentraedi warships in
the Factory Satellites, although, the Border Fleet vessels would continue to be
produced in Tirolian facilities throughout the empire and the massive shipyard
facilities in orbit of Kaberra, Haydon IV, and Tirol would be maintained.
In 2013 CE, the RDF and their Zentraedi allies detected signals from a Factory
Satellite. The station's commander was trying to locate Dolza and after failing to
locate him directly, was sending a general signal to any Zentraedi ships. An RDF
and Zentraedi joint task force was organized to force the station and its defense
fleet to surrender. The mission was successful and the surprise attack by the
combined forces of the RDF and Commander Breetai captured the Factory Satellite
and destroyed most of the defense fleet, suffering few casulties in the process.
Unfortunately, like all Zentraedi ships and facilities at the time, the Factory
Satellite was suffering from Protoculture depletion and it would take weeks to
drain the Protoculture from the remaining defense fleet and to repair the station's
Fold Drives. Even in orbit of Earth, the station was a shadow of its former self.
By draining a large portion of Breetai's remaining ships, the station's factories
and shipyards were brought back online, but at only a fraction of their original
production capacity, and even then, most remained dormant. Even in its decrepit
state, the factory satellite, rechristened Space Station Liberty, would prove a
valuable resource for the burgoening REF, building nearly all of its ships and the
SDF-3 Pioneer Super Dimensional Fortress.
When the REF Pioneer Expedition departed in 2022 CE, control of Space Station
Liberty was given to the Southern Cross, which used it to construct what they
thought was a powerful defense fleet. As the years passed, the raw materials
needed by the station began to exhaust the debris field left in orbit of Earth
by the destruction of the Zentraedi armada and the station was moved to the
asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It was here that the station was brutally
attacked by the Robotech Masters in 2029 CE. Wanting the station to rebuild their
empire, but not wanting to waste the resources capturing it at the time, the
Robotech Masters continued towards Earth after their initial attack against the
Space Factory, but they continued to harass the damaged station throughout the
Second Robotech War to ensure that it was not a danger to them.
With the Second Robotech War over and the Sentinels' War heating up for the REF,
Space Station Liberty was ordered to fold to Tirol in late 2032 CE. It was a
timely decision as the Invid invaded less than two years later. Unfortunately,
a lack of supplies from Earth and the constant attacks during the war had left
the station a hollow shell of its former state. The station spent much of the
Sentinels' War slowing rebuilding and being refit with the latest technologies
gained from the Sentinels and the Tirolians. By the end of the 2030's CE and
the end of the Sentinels' War and the REF Civil War, the station had been brought
to almost full capacity, and was instrumental in building the REF's attack fleets
to liberate Earth.
Space Station Liberty served as the one of the three main manufacturing centers for
the REF, the other two being Tirolian Orbital Shipyards and the Kaberran Orbital
Shipyards. In 2042, the REF encountered a Factory Satellite that had long been
abandoned by its Zentraedi and Tirolians crew, except for a few Bioroids.
Unfortunately, before the station could be captured, it was able to fold away from
the small REF fleet. It was not until 2052 that the REF discovered signals being
sent by another Space Factory, this time not abandoned. The REF organized a large
fleet and sent them to capture the station. The fleet was able to persuade crew of
the station to join the REF. The new Space Factory, called G-02 by the REF, was
placed in orbit of Tirol and was repaired and upgraded and made identical to Space
Station Liberty, also known as G-01. In 2055, control of the two factories, and all
future Space Factories was transferred to the RDF. A deep space exploration ship
located a third Space Factory, designated G-03, in 2055. Abandoned and completely
out of power, the station was determined to be the one encountered in 2042. The G-03
was placed in orbit of Kaberra, but was attacked and destroyed by a rogue Zentraedi
fleet led by Kyron II. After the destruction of the G-03, the RDF decided to begin a
bold project, to construct a Super Space Factory similar to the Super Factory
Satellite that was found in the Tirolian database. The project would begin in 2056
but would not be complete until 2065.
The Robotech Space Factories consist of a Main Body, holding the largest of the
shipyards, as well as the main systems, the Protoculture Reactor, and the Fold Drive.
Attached to the Main Body are four Factory Pods that hold the main mecha production
plants and several shipyards each. A large, reinforced access stalk connects the Main
Body to each of these Factory Pods. The Main Body has one entrance large enough to
allow even a Tirolian Mother Ship (an Azashar Class General Purpose Vessel) access to
the inside of the station. The main docking bay housed incoming vessels prior to
assignment to a repair dock and newly constructed vessels in the final stages of their
construction. All of the construction and repair bays located in the Main Body could
be reached from this bay. There are similar docking bays located in the Factory Pods,
but they are much smaller than the bay in the Main Body. There were few defensive
installations installed on the station, especially given its size, but it was assumed
that the Space Factory would always use its fold drive if attacked. As a consequence,
the station mounted mainly anti-mecha and anti-missile defense systems.

Speed:
- Fold Drive: Uses a Fold Drive with a maximum speed of 10 light-years per
hour. The ship's navigational equipment cannot safely execute a fold jump of
distances greater than 1 kiloparsec (3260 light-years) and it can only be
activated once per hour.
- Sublight: Can travel at up to 5% of the speed of light (0.05c) and
accelerate / decelerate at a rate of 0.05 percent of light (0.0005c) per melee
round.
- Atmospheric Propulsion: The station cannot operate in an atmosphere; it
cannot come within 10,000 miles (16,000 km) of a planet's atmosphere without
being caught in its gravity well.
- Maximum Range: Effectively unlimited by drive system and the station can
manufacture and grow its own supplies. The station can provide continuous
supplies for over a million soldiers per month.

Weapon Systems:
- LC-12 Main Laser Cannons (10)
Strategically placed across the surface of the station are ten powerful
laser canons. These cannons are designed for anti-ship warfare. The largest
cluster, with three cannons are located at the main entrance on the main
body, and there is one cannon on of each of the factory pods. Only six
cannons can fire on any given target unless it is right in front of the main
entrance, where it can be hit by eight cannons.
- Range: 100 miles (160.9 km) underwater, 200 miles (321.9 km)
through an atmosphere, and 200,000 miles (321,869 km) in space.
- Damage: 1D4x1000 M.D. per single blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 24
- Rate of Fire: Each cannon can fire once every other melee round.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- PB-45 Particle Beam Cannon Turrets (40)
This twin-cannon turret is designed to attack large spaceships. Each turret
can rotate 360 degrees and has an arc of fire of 180 degrees. The turrets
are scattered across the station, with 20 on the main body and 5 on each of
the factory pods.

- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 24
- Rate of Fire: Each cannon can fire twice per melee round.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- PB-4 Particle Beam Cannons (160)
These retractable cannons are an improved version of the PB-2 Particle Cannons
used on the old Oberth destroyers. These cannons are not quite capable enough
to be effective against ships larger than the Zentraedi Tou Redir scouts, the
Tirolian Roil Tiluvo assault corvettes, or the Invid Mollusk carriers. The
cannons are scattered across the station, with 60 on the main body and 25 on
each of the factory pods.
- Range: 31.1 miles (50 km) underwater, 62.1 miles (100 km) through
an atmosphere, and 62,137 miles (100,000 km) in space.
- Damage: 4D4x10 M.D. per single blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 24
- Rate of Fire: Each cannon can fire six times per melee round.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- LT-5 Point Defense Laser Turrets (400)
The LT-5 lasers are designed to deliver heavy firepower on very close targets.
A double-barreled laser with a round sensor between the barrels, the LT-5 is
stored inside the hull, but elevates upwards from under movable panels into
firing position. The turrets are scattered across the station, with 200 on
the main body and 50 on each of the factory pods.
- Range: 1.6 miles (2.5 km) underwater, 3.1 miles (5 km) through an
atmosphere, and 310.7 miles (500 km) in space.

has a penalty of -10 to strike any target under 500 tons (453.6 metric tons).
- SRS-2 Heavy Missile Launchers (100)
A ramp type launch system was designed for the new cruise missiles used by the
REF. While these launchers held significantly less rockets, they retained the
fast rate of fire that the older designs used on the ARMD cruisers had. The
launchers are scattered across the station, with 40 on the main body and 15 on
each of the factory pods.
- Missile Design: RRG RMS-3 Archangel of Death Cruise Missiles

advanced targeting equipment that gives a bonus of +6 to strike a moving
target, but has a penalty of -10 to strike any target under 500 tons (453.6
metric tons).
Shield Systems:
- DS-1 Pinpoint Barrier System (18)
The ship can create 18 small disk-shaped force fields that can be moved around
the ship to block incoming attacks. Each pinpoint barrier is 197' (60 m) in
diameter and completely regenerates all damage at the beginning of each melee
round. To block an attack, each the barrier must make a successful parry roll,
with a bonus of +7. Each barrier can deflect up to 8 separate attacks per melee
round. Excess damage caused by a beam or projectile weapon will damage the ship,
but excess damage from a missile or a missile volley will be completely
deflected. Multiple barriers can be used to block the same attack, but each must
make a successful parry roll.
- M.D.C.: 5000 each
- DS-2 Omni-Directional Barrier System
An adaptation of the system first developed on the SDF-1 Macross, the DS-2 Barrier
System completely covers the ship in a protective shield. Unfortunately, the ship
protected by the shield cannot fire any of its weapons without hitting the shield
that is protecting it. The barrier system regenerates at a rate of 100 M.D.C. per
minute while it is active and 10,000 M.D.C. per hour while it is inactive. When
the shield reaches 0 M.D.C., violently explodes causing 1D4 million M.D. to
everything within a 1D4x10 mile area, 1D4x1000 M.D. to everything 5 miles (8 km)
area beyond that, and 1D4x100 M.D. to everything 10 miles (16 km) beyond that.
- M.D.C.: 60,000
Special Systems:
- Electronic Warfare System
The ship is equipped with a standard REF EW suite.
- ECM: 4
- ECCM: 2
- EWS Abilities: Attract Tracking Device, Break Tracking Device Lock-On,
Generate ECM and ECCM (5 points), Light Target, Scramble Communications, and
Scramble Sensor Information.
- SF-X Shadow Cloaking Device (after 2037 CE refit only)
Developed alongside the mecha version, the SF-X Shadow Cloaking Device has only
one purpose: to prevent any Protoculture emissions from escaping a ship. With an
active shadow device, a ship is basically rendered invisible to the Invid's most
powerful sensor system and most Invid brains will ignore a target that they can
see on their subspace mass sensors, but not on their Protoculture sensors.
Unfortunately, the device is not very stable and there is a 50% chance that the
device will fail when the ship loses at least 50% of its main body; roll for the
first time it is reduced past this point and for each subsequent attack that
inflicts at least 1% of the main body's M.D.C. in a single attack or a volley.
- Protoculture Reactor Recharger
The station is able to recharge other ship's Protoculture Reactors by draining
its own reactor of energy. For every ten years recharged by the station, the
life span of the station's Protoculture Reactor is reduced by one year.
- Spaceship Production Facilities
The station contains extensive spaceship construction facilities. There are
five building docks measuring 13,123' (4000 m) in length, 40 building docks
measuring 8202' (2500 m) in length, and 125 building docks measuring 1969'
(600 m) in length. In total, 170 ships could be under construction at the
same time. The station is only designed to build RDF, Southern Cross, and
REF ships. At normal production it takes one month to build a Garfish Class
Destroyer or a Battle Class Heavy Destroyer, two months to build a Tristar
Class Light Cruiser or an Ajax Class Assault Landing Ship, four months to
build a Tokugawa Class Cruiser or a Tokugawa Class Troop Transport, six
months to build an Ikazuchi Class Heavy Cruiser, and one year to build a
Pioneer Class Super Dimensional Fortress or an Izumo Class Super Dimensional
Fortress. Reduce production times by half if a facility is at maximum
production, but for every month the facility is at maximum production there
is a cumulative 5% chance that the facility will fail and require 1D4 months
of repair before restarting operations.
- Spaceship Repair Facilities
Each spaceship construction dock can be used to repair or refit an REF ship;
the docks can also be used to repair or refit any Sentinel or Southern Cross
ship. The length of time it takes to repair a ship depends on the extent of
the damage or disrepair of the ship. The average length of time to repair a
ship can last from a few days to a several weeks.
- Cyclone Production Facilities (after 2032 CE refit only)
The station contains several cyclone cycle construction facilities. There are
ten cyclone factories, two in the main body and two in each factory pod, and
each factory is designed to be generic and can construct any REF cyclone
cycle. At normal production, each factory can produce 300 VR-052 Battler
Cyclone Cycles, 150 VF-041 Saber Cyclone Cycles, or 400 VR-038 Light Cyclone
Cycles per month. It takes one week to retool a factory from producing one
mecha type to a different mecha type. Double rate of production if a factory
is at maximum production, but for every month the factory is at maximum
production there is a cumulative 5% chance that the factory will fail and
require 1D4 weeks of repair before restarting operations.
- Mecha Production Facilities
The station contains several mecha construction facilities. There are ten
mecha factories, six in the main body and one in each factory pod, and each
factory is designed to be generic and can construct any REF mecha. At normal
production, each factory can produce 50 VAF-6 Alpha Fighters, 30 VBF-1 Beta
Fighters, 20 VF-2 Vindicator Fighters, 60 SF-6 Vulture Space Fighters, 40
VHT-2 Spartas Hover Tanks, 50 ZP-1 Tactical Battle Pods, 40 ZP-2 Officer
Combat Pods, 40 Destroids of any type (except the MAR-00 Mk-II Monster
Destroid and the MAR-20 Mk-III Little Monster Destroid), 6 MAR-20 Mk-III
Little Monster Destroid, and 2 MAR-00 Mk-II Monster Destroids per month. It
takes one week to retool a factory from producing one mecha type to a different
mecha type. Double rate of production if a factory is at maximum production,
but for every month the factory is at maximum production there is a cumulative
5% chance that the factory will fail and require 1D4 weeks of repair before
restarting operations.
- Auxiliary Production Facilities
The station contains extensive auxiliary construction facilities. There are
five auxiliary factories, one in the main body and one in each factory pod,
and each factory is designd to be generic and can construct any auxiliary
REF unit. At normal production, each factory can produce 200 SF-7 Shadow
Cloaking Devices, 50 YMH-10 Synchro Cannons, 5 GMU-1 Ground Mobile Siege
Units, 2 Horizont Troop Shuttles, and 2 Predator Drop Ships per month. It
takes one week to retool a factory from producing one mecha type to a different
mecha type. Double rate of production if a factory is at maximum production,
but for every month the factory is at maximum production there is a cumulative
5% chance that the factory will fail and require 1D4 weeks of repair before
restarting operations.
- Weapon Production Facilities
The stations contains several weapon construction facilities. There is one
factory dedicated to producing armor and another dedicated to producing
infantry weapons. At normal production, the factories can produce 5000 suits
of armor of any type and 5000 infantry weapons of any type per week. Double
rate of production if a factory is at maximum production, but for every
month the factory is at maximum production there is a cumulative 5% chance
that the factory will fail and require 1D4 weeks of repair before restarting
operations.
- Missile Production Facilities
The station contains several missile construction facilities. There are four
missile factories, all in the main body, and each factory is designed to be
generic and can construct nearly all missiles used by the REF. At normal
production, each factory can produce 15,000 short range missiles, 10,000
medium range missiles, 2500 long range missiles, 500 cruise missiles, or 250
ICBMs per week. It takes one week to retool a factory from producing one
missile design to a different missile design. Double rate of production if a
factory is at maximum production, but for every month the factory is at
maximum production there is a cumulative 5% chance that the factory will fail
and require 1D4 weeks of repair before restarting operations. The construction
of a missile includes all guidance systems and warheads, although no more then
25 reflex warheads and nuclear warheads of any type can be built per month.
- Missile Storage
The station has storage for a large number of missiles used by all REF ships.
Fully loaded, the station holds 20 million long range missiles, 5 million cruise
missiles, and 100,000 intercontinental ballistic missiles. These can be
transferred to ships to reload their missile supplies or they can be used to
reload the station's own missile launchers. Transferring missiles to a ship
takes about five minutes for every 100 missiles transferred. Reloading the
station's missile racks takes about 1 melee round to completely reload one
missile launcher and up to 75 launchers can be reloaded simultaneously.
Standard Systems:
- Life Support System
The ship has a fully operational life support system that provides fresh
atmosphere throughout the ship. The life support system can sustain a maximum of
250,000 people indefinitely or 1.5 million people for a short period of time in
case of an emergency.
- Communication Systems
The ship is equipped with three communication systems. The first is a long range
laser system with a maximum range of 100,000 miles (160,934 km), the transmissions
travel at the speed of light, but they rely on line of sight, so it cannot
communicate with a ship that is on the other side of a solid object. The second
system is a long range radio system with a maximum range of 10,000 miles (16,100
km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but they are easy to
intercept and jam. The third system is a satellite relay system that allows the
ship to boost the range of the other communication systems indefinitely by using
satellites or other ships to relay the transmission. The ship's communication
array can maintain contact with up to 2500 ships simultaneously.
- Sensor Systems
The ship is equipped with four sensor systems. The first is the Electromagnetic
Detection Equipment that detects other sensor systems at twice the maximum range
of their transmitter. The second is a powerful array that uses standard radar
waves, which are fairly easy to jam, but it is obvious when the radar array is
being jammed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 900,000 miles
(1,448,410 km), small targets at a range of up to 9 million miles (14.5 million
km), medium targets at a range of up to 18 million miles (29 million km), and
large targets at a range of up to 27 million miles (43.5 million km) . The third
is a Subspace Mass Sensor that uses gravity-based technology to detect target's
at real time speed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 1.5
million miles (2.4 million km), small targets at a range of up to 15 million
miles (24.1 million km), medium targets at a range of up to 30 million miles
(48.3 million km), and large targets at a range of up to 45 million miles (72.4
million km). The forth is a Hyperspace Mass Sensor that can detect and track
ships that are using a Fold Drive. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range
of up to 6 parsecs (19.56 light-years), small targets at a range of up to 30
parsecs (97.8 light-years), medium targets at a range of up to 60 parsecs (195.6
light-years), and large targets at a range of up to 90 parsecs (293.4
light-years). See Human Ship
Systems for more details on sensor systems.
- Targeting Computer System
Connecting the station's sensor systems with the weapon systems is the Targeting
Computer System. The system is designed to control all of the weapons currently
equipped on the station. This system can track up to 300 targets simultaneously,
providing detailed information about the targets from the ships data files. All
direct fire weapons receive a bonus of +5 to strike and all missile weapons
receive a bonus of +3 to strike. These bonuses are in addition to any previously
stated bonuses or penalties.
Combat Summary:
