Garfish Class Destroyer
(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 01/15/2006)
- Background information inspired by
Garfish class Super Dimensional
Scout Cruiser by Pieter Thomassen and Peter Walker on the
Unofficial Robotech Reference
Guide.
If a single vessel came to symbolize the struggle of the REF against the Invid outposts that
littered the Galaxy after the fall of the Robotech Masters and their Zentraedi armada, it was
the Garfish destroyer. As the Battle Class Heavy Destroyers were lost to war, relief missions
to Earth, and the ravages of age, a new vessel was designed to replace them. The Garfish design
was to see fewer cannons, but in their place a single large turret was installed, with the punch
needed to reliably dispatch an Invid troop ship quickly. Because the Spacelord missiles were of
limited utility against the Invid, these weapons were deleted in favor of a less heavy
forward-firing torpedo battery.
The first vessels of this class were built at Tirol, the Garfish being commissioned in January
of 2028. Production was interrupted after 33 units (SDE-01 to SDE-33) because of the destruction
of the Tirolian orbital shipyards in late 2030, as the Sentinels put down Edwards' abortive coup.
Production was then moved to Kaberra, with the Shillelagh, the 34th Garfish class vessel, being
commissioned in January 2031. This class was then constructed at a rate of ten per year and 81
(SDE-34 to SDE- 114) were built before the departure of the Jupiter and Saturn Groups for Earth
in 2038. In 2036, destroyer production began in the rebuilt Tirol Orbital Shipyards and twelve
ships (SDE-115 to SDE-126) were built before the fleets left for Earth in 2038. Ships of the
first series of Tirolian construction were given names of aquatic animals, usually aggressive or
carnivorous species. Ships of the second series of Kaberran manufacture were given the names of
ancient and medieval weapons. The third series of ships, from the Tirol shipyards, were given the
names of carnivorous, and sometimes venomous, reptiles.
The Garfish destroyer, named for its main hull shape, is the REF's follow-up to the Battle Class
Heavy Destroyer. Consequently, the Garfish's weaponry is more optimized for fighting the Regent's
Invid. The two designs served in similar roles in most actions the two saw. The Garfish class' smaller
size causes a smaller mecha and troop complement on less hangar space, but this was part of a
deliberate decision to modify the role of the destroyer, as the REF's emphasis had moved from the
smaller destroyers to the larger cruisers and battle fortresses which became the home to most mecha.
Additionally, the Garfish could be built faster and in larger numbers than the far more complex and
heavier Battle destroyers.
The Garfish has a fish-like main hull with a six-sided section in the middle that houses the internal
mecha bays. The three larger engines are mounted side by side in the back. A large, two level hangar
with three bay doors and the smaller thrusters is suspended from the section that houses the internal
bays. The main particle cannon is suspended from the main hull keel, fore of the hangar. Like the
Ikazuchi Class Heavy Cruiser, the Garfish Class Destroyer was underpowered in the area of AAA
(anti-aircraft artillery). Though the missiles and turret were more than enough to destroy any single
attacking mecha, there were just not enough point defense weapons to repel a deluge by suicide
runners. Again, to correct this problem after the Third Robotech War, the survivors of the Garfish
class incorporated extensive suits of dedicated point defense systems.
With a small complement of fighters, and a battalion sized Cyclone Marine Infantry unit,
camaraderie aboard ship was the standard, and as a whole, the cohesion of these crews gave soldiers
stationed aboard these vessels the highest average kill ratio of all the ships the REF has ever put
into service. A typical patrol duty would involve the insertion into a stellar system of three
Garfish. If the system turned out to be inhabited by a single Invid outpost (small hive), the three
Cyclone units would be delivered to the planet. The troops would dig in, and launch an offensive
against the Invid outpost, while the Garfish's cannon and missiles would suppress any Invid launch
into space, and also wear down the Invid hive's energy barrier. However, if a larger Invid presence
was detected the troops would remain onboard. Insertion on such a plant would be suicide, even in a
defensive stance. A cruiser would be called in with the hyperspace transmitter, while the Garfish
would make hit and run raids against Invid orbital installations. The detachment could use the
ship's great speed to escape any Invid pursuers. In a pitched fleet battle, the Garfish class
destroyers' main duty would be to seek-out and destroy the Invid troop carriers before they could
release their mecha into the battle, a task which, owing to the agility and speed of this vessel,
they were uniquely adapted.
Six of these vessels were sent back to Earth with the Marcus Antonius in 2030, to aid the Southern
Cross in defending Earth. Another eight were dispatched to Earth in the Advance Group, accompanied
by the light cruiser Thunderbolt and 50 Horizont shutles, in 2035. These vessels were responsible
for carrying the 7th Marine Division, which established the landing zone at Point K in South America.
Unfortunately, the sheer numbers of Invid on Earth exceeded the expectations of all the military
planners, and through little fault of their own, except perhaps insufficient AAA, these vessels were
unable to carry the day for the Mars Group attack on Invid-occupied Earth, and were hard-pressed
during the Jupiter and Saturn Division attacks even when equipped with shadow devices. The Invid
destroyed many of Saturn Group's destroyers as they fled Earth, in an attempt to prevent the
Neutron-S bombardment of Earth. Though some of these vessels were lost during the Sentinels' war and
the mop-up of the Regent's forces, the Invid destroyed most over Earth.

Notes:
| * |
Destroying the main engines will severely impair the ship. If the main engines are put out
of commission, the ship will be floating dead in space or will crash if the damage occurs
in atmosphere. If the engine systems are shut down, all other systems will continue to
function. |
| ** |
Depleting the M.D.C. of the main body will shut down the entire ship, including life support,
gravity control, communications, weapons, and engines. |
Speed:
- Fold Drive: Uses a Fold Drive with a maximum speed of 10 light-years per hour. The ship's
navigational equipment cannot safely execute a fold jump of distances greater than 1 kiloparsec
(3260 light-years) and it can only be activated once per hour.
- Sublight: Can travel at up to 10 percent of the speed of light (0.10c) and accelerate /
decelerate at a rate of 0.5 percent of light (0.005c) per melee.
- Atmospheric Propulsion: Mach 3 (2235 mph / 3600 km/h), can enter and leave an atmosphere
under its own power, but it is not designed for atmospheric flight.
- Maximum Range: Effectively unlimited by drive system, but onboard supplies for the crew
and troops will last for 6 months before the ship needs to be restocked.
Statistical Data:
- Height: 229' (69.8 m)
- Width: 195' (59.4 m)
- Length: 586' (178.6 m)
- Weight: 76,941 tons (69,800 metric tons)
- Reactor System: Mk-II Protoculture Reactor with a life span of 25 years.
- Propulsion System: Chemical Rocket
- Gravity System: Internal
Weapon Systems:
- PB-30 Particle Beam Cannon Turret
The ship uses a triple barreled Particle Beam Cannon as its main offensive weapon. This weapon was
first used on the Garfish, but proved to be so successful that later refits replaced most Particle
Beam weapons on other ships with this weapon system. The turret can rotate 190 degrees and has an
arc of fire of 45 degrees.
- Range: 62.1 miles (100 km) underwater, 124.3 miles (200 km) through an atmosphere, and
124,274 miles (200,000 km) in space.
- Damage: 4D6x20 M.D. per triple blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 24
- Rate of Fire: Each turret can fire five times per melee.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- LT-5 Point Defense lsaer Turrets (4)
The LT-5 lasers are designed to deliver heavy firepower on very close targets. A double-barreled laser
with a round sensor between the barrels, the LT-5 is stored inside the hull, but elevates upwards from
under movable panels into firing position. The four turrets are mounted on the sides of the main hull,
above the hangers.
- Range: 1.6 miles (2.5 km) underwater, 3.1 miles (5 km) through an atmosphere, and
310.7 miles (500 km) in space.
- Damage: 2D6x10 M.D. per single blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 23
- Rate of Fire: Each turret can fire four times per melee.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- SLS-25 Vertical Missile Launcher
This system replaces the Pepperbox launchers used on old RDF ship designs. This new system consists
of two rows of three launch tubes for each missile launcher, this allows for an even higher rate of
fire. The launcher is located in the front section of the ship.
- Missile Design: Hughes Warhawk,
General Dynamics / Euromissile / BAe Spacehawk, or
Tirol Drive Yards Barracuda Long Range Missiles
- Missile Type: Varies with the missile design.
- Missile Guidance Systems: Varies with the missile design.
- Missile Warhead: Varies with the missile design.
- Range: 800 miles (1288 km) in an atmosphere and 935,525 miles (1,505,582 km / 5.0 light
seconds) in space.
- Speed: 2500 mph (4023 km/h) in an atmosphere and an acceleration of 4% of light (0.04c)
per melee in space, with a maximum duration in space of 16 melees and a maximum
safe speed in space of 55% of light (0.55c).
- Damage and Blast Radius: Varies with type of missile warhead.
- Rate of Fire: One at a time or in volleys of any size up to 6 missiles. The launcher
can fire three times per melee round.
- Payload: 60 long range missiles.
- Modifiers: Increase range in space by 25%, but reduce warhead strength by 10%.
Automatically hits a stationary target in space, has more advanced targeting equipment that
gives a bonus of +6 to strike a moving target, but has a penalty of -10 to strike any target
under 500 tons (453.6 metric tons).
Special Systems:
- Electronic Warfare System
The ship is equipped with a standard REF EW suite.
- ECM: 4
- ECCM: 3
- EWS Abilities: Attract Tracking Device, Break Tracking Device Lock-On, and Scramble
Communications.
- SF-X Shadow Cloaking Device (after 2037 CE only)
Developed alongside the mecha version, the SF-X Shadow Cloaking Device has only one purpose: to
prevent any Protoculture emissions from escaping a ship. With an active shadow device, a ship is
basically rendered invisible to the Invid's most powerful sensor system and most Invid brains
will ignore a target that they can see on their subspace mass sensors, but not on their
Protoculture sensors. Unfortunately, the device is not very stable and there is a 50% chance that
the device will fail when the ship loses at least 50% of its main body; roll for the first time
it is reduced past this point and for each subsequent attack that inflicts at least 1% of the
main body's M.D.C. in a single attack or a volley.
Standard Systems:
- Life Support System
The ship has a fully operational life support system that provides fresh atmosphere throughout the
ship. The life support system can sustain a maximum of 800 people indefinitely or 1200 people for a
short period of time in case of an emergency.
- Communication Systems
The ship is equipped with four communication systems. The first is a long range laser system with
a maximum range of 100,000 miles (160,934 km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but
they rely on line of sight, so it cannot communicate with a ship that is on the other side of a
solid object. The second system is a long range radio system with a maximum range of 10,000 miles
(16,100 km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but they are easy to intercept and jam.
The third system is a satellite relay system that allows the ship to boost the range of the other
communication systems indefinitely by using satellites or other ships to relay the transmission. The
forth system is a Hyperspace Communications Relay, which travels at a rate of one light-year every 5
seconds. Hyperspace communications can travel through planets and other obstructions unhindered, are
extremely difficult to intercept, and impossible to jam. The ship's communication array can maintain
contact with up to 350 ships simultaneously.
- Sensor Systems
The ship is equipped with three sensor systems. The first is the Electromagnetic Detection Equipment
that detects other sensor systems at twice the maximum range of their transmitter. The second is a
powerful array that uses standard radar waves, which are fairly easy to jam, but it is obvious when
the radar array is being jammed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 450,000 miles
(724,205 km), small targets at a range of up to 4.5 million miles (7.2 million km), medium targets at
a range of up to 9 million miles (14.5 million km), and large targets at a range of up to 13.5
million miles (21.7 million km). The third is a Subspace Mass Sensor that uses gravity-based
technology to detect target's at real time speed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up
to 500,000 miles (804,672 km), small targets at a range of up to 5 million miles (8 million km),
medium targets at a range of up to 10 million miles (16.1 million km), and large targets at a range
of up to 15 million miles (24.1 million km). See Human
Ship Systems for more details on sensor systems.
- Targeting Computer System
Connecting the ship's sensor systems with the weapon systems is the Targeting Computer System. The
system is designed to control all of the weapons currently equipped on the ship. This system can
track up to 100 targets simultaneously, providing detailed information about the targets from the
ships data files. All direct fire weapons receive a bonus of +2 to strike and missiles using
non-autonomous guidance systems receive a bonus of +2 to strike. These bonuses are in addition to
any previously stated bonuses or penalties.
Sensor Class: Class III
Combat Summary:
- ECM: 4
- ECCM: 3
- EWS Abilities: Attract Tracking Device, Break Tracking Device Lock-On, and Scramble
Communications.
- Combat Actions: 4
- Targeting System: Can track up to 100 targets simultaneously and provide a bonus of +2 to
strike for all direct fire weapons and +2 to strike for all missiles using non-autonomous
guidance systems.
