Ajax Class Assault Landing Ship
(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 02/17/2006)
- Background information inspired by the
Unofficial Robotech
Reference Guide.
The troop landing capacity of the early REF depended on three classes of ships: the large Tokugawa
troop transports, which could land a complete Army corps and supporting Air Force, the Predator
drop ships, which served as orbital transports and as temporary bases, and the Ajax class of
landing ships, which were intended to land troops and supplies in larger bulk than the Predators
could support, but into landing zones that were considered too hot to risk an entire corps and an
irreplaceable Tokugawa transport, or that were for too small a scale to justify using an entire
corps and transporting ship. The Ajax class then filled the gap between the Predator and the
Tokugawa, being fold capable unlike the Predators and capable of delivering a reinforced brigade to
the combat theater.
The Ajax class is a development of the Tristar Class Light Cruiser. The Ajax has an identical
engine section, differing visually from the Tristar only in the shape of the forward hull and the
armament. As the Ajax is designed as a landing ship, many armaments of the Tristar have been
removed in order to free up internal space for the troops, their mecha and their supplies. The
fighter complement has been reduced to 60, the particle guns have been deleted along with the
heavy missiles and two of the other missile launchers, and the magazines for the remaining launchers
have been decreased in capacity. The freed space is used to carry a reinforced brigade and two
Destroid battalions, together with enough combat supplies to last them two weeks.
The cannon armament is concentrated on the forward dorsal deck. The two heavy rail guns are mounted
forward, in front of the command tower. Laser turrets cover all other firing arcs. However, the weak
point of the design was the point defense capability, which meant that Invid attacks had to be
countered decisively at a distance, as the Ajax could not defeat a concentrated and sustained attack.
The Destroids occupy mecha bays in the bottom of the vessel, while the defensive fighters operate
from the sponson bays. The Ajax class, like the Tristar, is equipped with a fold drive. As with the
Tristar vessels, the fold system was unreliable and replaced in the surviving members of this class
by a more reliable version from 2028 onwards.
The Ajax class folded in its entirety with the SDF-3 Pioneer for Tirol in 2022. Through careful
planning and cautious operational use, none were destroyed in the Sentinels' War. The first losses
for the class occurred in 2030, when all but two vessels of the class folded with the REF relief
expedition to Earth and were drafted into the Southern Cross attack waves. Predictably, using troop
ships in fleet actions was not a healthy job for the ships, and the Tirolian forces destroyed the
America, Akagi, and Ark Royal. The other ships were all damaged to some extent, but the REF
flotillas, trained to protect the Ajax class ships as a matter of course, took much of the other
damage and the seven managed to escape to the Moon for repairs. After the war, the ships were used
in the repatriation of the Tirolian clones to Tirol, and once there, again drafted into the REF.
Meanwhile, one of the two Ajax class vessels that remained with the REF, the Asmodeus, had been
lost in the REF Civil War, when she attempted to land Loyalist troops on Tirol. In 2035 two ships
of this class, the Achates and the Audace, were assigned to the Thunderbolt Task Force, and folded
for Earth with a battle group of the 7th REF Marine Division, consisting of 6000 men and 2000
Veritech Fighters, with the hopes of establishing an advance base on Earth, at a location in South
America designated "Point K". Contact was lost with the Thunderbolt Task Force after a garbled
message concerning an Invid presence on Earth. After the Battle at Reflex Point, the wrecks of the
two Ajax class vessels were located at Point K, surrounded by the remains of the 7th Marine
Division's gear and personnel.
The other six ships of the class returned to Earth with the main fleet, and were among the ships
that brought the REF ground assault force to the planet, landing the force near Reflex Point. After
the battle, in which the ships did not participate, the REF command being more pragmatic than their
SC predecessors, the remaining ships, the Ajax, Antietam, Anzio, Ayanami, Aurora, and Albion, were
mothballed in the Sea of Tranquility depot, as no amphibious assaults were expected in the
foreseeable future.

Speed:
- Fold Drive: Uses a Fold Drive with a maximum speed of 10 light-years per hour. The ship's
navigational equipment cannot safely execute a fold jump of distances greater than 1 kiloparsec
(3260 light-years) and it can only be activated once per hour.
- Sublight: Can travel at up to 15 percent of the speed of light (0.15c) and accelerate /
decelerate at a rate of 0.1 percent of light (0.001c) per melee.
- Atmospheric Propulsion: Mach 3 (2235 mph / 3600 km/h), can enter and leave an atmosphere
under its own power, but it is not designed for atmospheric flight.
- Maximum Range: Effectively unlimited by drive system, but onboard supplies for the crew
and troops will last for 4 months before the ship needs to be restocked. Water stores were
recycled almost completely and hydroponics installations provided the crew with a limited supply
of fresh foods.

- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 25
- Rate of Fire: Each cannon can fire six times per melee.
- Payload: 480 rounds per turret, for a total of 960 rounds.
- LT-5 Point Defense lsaer Turrets (14)
The LT-5 lasers are designed to deliver heavy firepower on very close targets. A double-barreled laser
with a round sensor between the barrels, the LT-5 is stored inside the hull, but elevates upwards from
under movable panels into firing position. Two turrets are mounted abeam of the command tower, two
more are mounted on each side of the main hull forward and lower than the centerline of the sponsons,
two are mounted on the dorsal main hull, two are mounted around the engines, and the last four are in
the forward hull.
- Range: 1.6 miles (2.5 km) underwater, 3.1 miles (5 km) through an atmosphere, and
310.7 miles (500 km) in space.
- Damage: 2D6x10 M.D. per single blast.
- M.D.C. Weapon Rating: 23
- Rate of Fire: Each turret can fire four times per melee round.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited
- SMS-10 Vertical Missile Launchers (2)
This system replaces the Pepperbox launchers used on old RDF ship designs. This new system consists
of two rows of five launch tubes for each missile launcher, this allows for an even higher rate of
fire. These launchers are located in the dorsal and ventral side sponsons.
- Missile Design: Hughes Warhawk and General Dynamics / Euromissile / BAe Spacehawk Long
Range Missiles
- Missile Type: Anti-Spaceship only.
- Missile Guidance Systems: Select any one available guidance system.
- Missile Warhead: Armor Piercing, Fragmentation, High Explosive, Plasma / Napalm, Fuel
Air Explosive, Kinetic Energy, Multi-Warhead, Nuclear, Proton Torpedo, and Reflex only.
- Range: 800 miles (1288 km) in an atmosphere and 935,525 miles (1,505,582 km / 5.0 light
seconds) in space.
- Speed: 2500 mph (4023 km/h) in an atmosphere and an acceleration of 4% of light (0.04c)
per melee in space, with a maximum duration in space of 16 melees and a maximum
safe speed in space of 55% of light (0.55c).
- Damage and Blast Radius: Varies with type of missile warhead.
- Rate of Fire: One at a time or in volleys of any size up to 10 missiles. Each launcher
can fire three times per melee round.
- Payload: 60 missiles per launcher, for a total of 240 long range missiles.
- Modifiers: Increase range in space by 25%, but reduce warhead strength by 10%.
Automatically hits a stationary target in space, has more advanced targeting equipment that
gives a bonus of +6 to strike a moving target, but has a penalty of -10 to strike any target
under 500 tons (453.6 metric tons).
Special Systems:
- Electronic Warfare System
The ship is equipped with a standard REF EW suite.
- ECM: 4
- ECCM: 4
- EWS Abilities: Attract Tracking Device, Break Tracking Device Lock-On, Light Target, and
Scramble Communications.
Standard Systems:
- Life Support System
The ship has a fully operational life support system that provides fresh atmosphere throughout the
ship. The life support system can sustain a maximum of 2750 people indefinitely or 5000 people for
a short period of time in case of an emergency.
- Communication Systems
The ship is equipped with three communication systems. The first is a long range laser system with
a maximum range of 100,000 miles (160,934 km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but
they rely on line of sight, so it cannot communicate with a ship that is on the other side of a
solid object. The second system is a long range radio system with a maximum range of 10,000 miles
(16,100 km), the transmissions travel at the speed of light, but they are easy to intercept and jam.
The third system is a satellite relay system that allows the ship to boost the range of the other
communication systems indefinitely by using satellites or other ships to relay the transmission.
The ship's communication array can maintain contact with up to 1000 ships simultaneously.
- Sensor Systems
The ship is equipped with three sensor systems. The first is the Electromagnetic Detection Equipment
that detects other sensor systems at twice the maximum range of their transmitter. The second is a
powerful array that uses standard radar waves, which are fairly easy to jam, but it is obvious when
the radar array is being jammed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up to 750,000 miles
(1.2 million km), small targets at a range of up to 7.5 million miles (12.1 million km), medium targets
at a range of up to 15 million miles (24.1 million km), and large targets at a range of up to 22.5
million miles (36.2 million km). The third is a Subspace Mass Sensor that uses gravity-based
technology to detect target's at real time speed. The sensor can track tiny targets at a range of up
to 1 million miles (1.6 million km), small targets at a range of up to 10 million miles (16.1 million
km), medium targets at a range of up to 20 million miles (32.2 million km), and large targets at a
range of up to 30 million miles (48.3 million km). See Human
Ship Systems for more details on sensor systems.
- Targeting Computer System
Connecting the ship's sensor systems with the weapon systems is the Targeting Computer System. The
system is designed to control all of the weapons currently equipped on the ship. This system can
track up to 125 targets simultaneously, providing detailed information about the targets from the
ships data files. All direct fire weapons receive a bonus of +4 to strike and missiles using
non-autonomous guidance systems receive a bonus of +4 to strike. These bonuses are in addition to
any previously stated bonuses or penalties.
Combat Summary:
- ECM: 4
- ECCM: 4
- EWS Abilities: Attract Tracking Device, Break Tracking Device Lock-On, Light Target, and
Scramble Communications.
- Combat Actions: 4
- Strike: +4 to strike for all direct fire weapons and +4 to strike for all missiles using
non-autonomous guidance systems.
- Dodge: +2 to dodge.
