New Biomancy Trees

(Version 1.00 - Last Modified: 05/30/2005)

Introduction

As the Erbacce were leaving Green World, they had time to plan and prepare for their exodus. Thanks to this, they were able to bring more plants and animals then the Jungle Elves who left ten years earlier. Among the extra cargo were three special Trees, magical in nature. The Jungle Elves were forced to be pragmatic in their selection of which magical Trees that they could bring with them and had only selected the Trees of Wisdom and the Memory Trees, but the Erbacce brought seedlings for a new generation of Energy Trees, Grove Guardians, and Singing Trees.

The new trees brought were once integral parts of the Jungle Elves' society, but in the centuries since they arrived on Rifts Earth, they learned to live without them, but once contact was established with the Erbacce refugees, the three species were reintroduced to the Jungle Elves of Maga Island. By 109 PA, the three new trees could be found throughout Maga Island and have begun to spread across the rest of the Amazon Rain Forest.

Energy Trees

Practically unintelligent, Energy Trees are natural P.P.E. batteries and were pivotal in creating the Rifts that allowed first the Jungle Elves and then the Erbacce to leave Green World. It was unfortunate that the Jungle Elves were unable to bring any with them, but the Erbacce were better prepared and brought a fair number of acorns with them.

Unlike Trees of Wisdom, Energy Trees have an intelligence roughly equal to an animal, so they are able to identify friends and strangers, but they are not capable of independent thought. All faeries, Jungle Elves, Erbacce, and Treefolk are automatically considered friends unless they attack the tree or a nearby Energy Tree. For those that it considers friends, an Energy Tree will gladly share its stored energy, but strangers must first win its friendship through familiarity or the support of someone the tree recognizes as a friend. However, an Energy Tree is unforgiving to those it considers to be enemies, and it will never again share its energy with those that have hurt it, even if that person repents and has the support of a Tree of Wisdom.

Energy Trees are large, over 40' (12.2 m) tall, and are covered with knots and holes, revealing an entirely hollow trunk. Energy Trees are covered with fine leaves that change color with the seasons, from brown in Spring and Autumn to green in Summer and finally to white in Winter. These leaves change color regardless of the actual temperature, so in the warm winters of the Amazon Rain Forest, they can easily be identified by their brilliant white leaves. Energy Trees reproduce in the same manner as other Biomancy Trees from Green World, they can invest their life essence on an acorn which can be planted elsewhere to grow again. To do so, the Energy Tree must perform no other action and loses 1D6x10 M.D.C. per hour, becoming visibly withered, until it reaches 0 M.D.C., when it finally crumbles to dust, leaving a dark brown acorn behind. The acorn can last for centuries without being planted, but the life essence in the acorn is trapped in a form of stasis until it is planted.

Grove Guardians

The Grove Guardians were once considered to be the last line of defense before an enemy reaches the precious Trees of Wisdom. These trees were planted in a seemingly random pattern around groups of Trees of Wisdom and provided a protective perimeter around the precious trees. The guardians are not very intelligent but can communicate with nearby Trees of Wisdom, which help identify enemies from friends and strangers.

Grove Guardians are usually placed within 100' (30.5 m) of the Wisdom Trees that they have been assigned to protect and usually in groups of three, but in addition to the Grove Guardians protecting an individual tree, their are often extra trees to defend strategically important spots or to assist in the defense of important communities. With the introduction of Grove Guardians on Maga Island, all of the stone villages that represent the island's ports have a number of Grove Guardians planted around their perimeter to provide protection against invasions and pirates.

Grove Guardians are nearly identical in appearance to the Trees of Wisdom, except they are twice as tall (20' to 100' / 6.1 m to 30.5 m), except their bark tends to run in dark shades of green with blue hues instead of purple. Grove Guardians reproduce in the same manner as other Biomancy Trees from Green World, they can invest their life essence on an acorn which can be planted elsewhere to grow again.

Singing Trees

With communities spread over an entire planet, the inhabitants of Green World developed a natural way of communicating over long distances using the Singing Trees. These trees have several natural abilities all related to their ability to generating sound. They generate sound by sucking air into the tree's trunk, pushing it through several shaped holes within the trunk, and then back out through even more holes in the trunk of the tree.

The Singing Trees can generate a very soothing and relaxing sound, which nearly all inhabitants of Green World enjoy. While the music it creates may sound strange to those unfamiliar with it, listeners will usually find the sound enjoyable. In addition to playing soothing sounds, the Singing Trees use a mixture of ultrasonic sound and telepathy to convey messages over vast distances and even across continents.

Singing Trees are the second most intelligent of the Biomancy Trees, second only to the Trees of Wisdom, and are used as messengers by the Tree Councils and powerful Biomancers. However, Singing Trees are also very rare on Rifts Earth. Currently only a few exist within Maga Island and the Tribes of Green World and they are actively hunted down by the Kingdom of Lagarto, the city of Cibola, and the other enemies of the refugees from Green World.
