Gem Magic
(Version 1.01 - Last Modified: 02/13/2004)
Introduction
While Stone Masters specialize in manipulating stone and constructing Stone Pyramids, a great deal of their
training is dedicated to extracting spells and psionic abilities from gems. Originally, Stone Masters had
only a limited ability to extract powers from the gems and the ability to shape the gems in a minor fashion,
but continued research and training has dramatically improved the abilities of some Stone Masters, especially
those within the Atlantean communities. Although these increased powers are available to any Stone Master
that receives training in it, there are very few Stone Masters that know how to extract the true potential
from the gems, the Splugorth are only beginning to realize that the Atlanteans have discovered something that
they have not with the Stone Masters.
Normally Gem Magic has revolved around extracting one or two magical or psychic powers from specific types
of gems, in addition to some limited ability to shape and cut gems to increase their value, but the new
area of Gem Magic that the Atlanteans are now studying offers even more options. Not only does is the number
of gems that can be used to draw powers larger, but now the larger the gem is, the more useful and powerful
the abilities that can be drawn from it. The Stone Master is trained more extensively in gem cutting and can
use their innate stone powers to detect and modify gems to near perfect quality, given enough time. Finally,
the Stone Master has the ability to embed a gem into their own skin, permanently adding a special ability to
the Stone Master, but it causes a permanent loss of energy for as long as the gem remains embedded.
Gem Magic
The following abilities are known to all Stone Masters that receive extra training in Gem Magic:
- Locate Gems
The Stone Master can sense the location of naturally occurring gem and crystal formations, such as
diamonds and rubies, but not gold, rubies, or a buried jewelry store. This ability will determine
the exact location of the gems, including direction and depth beneath the surface, but it will not
provide the gem master with any details as to how difficult it will be to extract the gems or what
is immediately surrounding them. Base skill is 30% +5% per level of experience.
- Range: 100' (30.5 m) per level of experience
- Duration: Instant
- P.P.E.: None
- Recognize Gem Quality
The Stone Master can automatically recognize the quality level of any familiar gem, which includes
all of the gems listed in the Gem Powers section below, although they have
more difficulty with gems that they have never seen before. The quality level of a gem is based on
a scale of 0 to 10 and assumes that the highest quality of gem, a 10 on the scale, is perfectly
flawless and perfectly cut, in some cultures, this may not represent the most sought after gems.
Base skill is 50% +5% per level of experience, but there is a penalty of -15% for gems that the
Stone Master has never encountered before.
- Duration: Instant
- P.P.E.: None
- Gem Shaping
The Stone Master can mentally shape a gem stone as if it had been cut and polished by a professional,
transforming a raw, uncut gem into a high quality gem and adding facets and accents as desired. The
Stone Master must be holding the gem and requires several minutes of concentration to "shape" a gem.
Elegant and intricate designs can be accomplished as well, but they require twice as much PPE and
twice as much concentration to create. A gem can be moved one level of quality according to the
quality rules given in the Gem Powers section below for each use of this
ability, but each time this ability is used on the same gem, double the PPE cost and the
concentration time of the previous use of this ability. For example, moving a completely uncut
diamond from the lowest quality level to the third quality level would require this ability to be
used three times; the first time would cost 2 PPE and require 1D4 minutes of concentration, the
second time would cost 4 PPE and require 2D4 minutes of concentration, and the third time would cost
8 PPE and require 4D4 minutes of concentration. Base skill is 8% per level of experience and a
failed roll means that the use of this ability ruined the gem, lowering its quality level by 1D4, to
a minimum level of 0.
- Range: Touch only
- Duration: Permanent
- Concentration Time: 6D6 minutes. The concentration time can be divided into multiple
parts, but each time the Stone Master takes a break lasting longer then a melee round, the PPE
cost must be expended before the Stone Master can begin concentrating where they left off.
- P.P.E.: 2
- Drawing Magic from Gems
At first level, the Stone Master knows how to draw magic from all applicable types of gems and
crystals. Although most gems only provides access to a single spell, the size of the gem determines
how many times the gem can be used to cast the spell. Once that limit is reached, the gem will
crumble to dust. All precious stones used for this must be free of any serious flaw and must be cut
and polished to have a faceted / crystal appearance and must be at quality level three or higher.
Unfortunately, each time a spell is drawn from a precious stone, there is a 50% chance that its
quality level will decrease by one and even though the Stone Master can use the Gem Shaping ability
to improve the appearance of the gem, once the last power has been drawn from the gem, it will
instantly crumble into worthless dust.
- Range: The Stone Master must hold or have the gem on his or her person and mentally
concentrate on using the gem. For example, the Stone Master could wear a gem as a necklace, but
it must be against their skin and not separated by objects like a suit of armor. If the gem is
dropped or lost, the power from that gem instantly spots and still counts against the number
of uses for that gem. It is possible to activate a gem that the Stone Master is wearing, even if
they are wearing armor on top of it.
- Duration: Varies with spell or psionic ability.
- Limitation: The number of times that a gem can be activated depends on the size of the gem.
A gem that is less then one carat can be activated two times before it crumbles and gems that are
larger then one carat can be activated three times per carat. For example, if the gem was a five
carat diamond, it could be activated fifteen times before it crumbles to dust. In addition, a
gem must have a quality level of three or higher in order for the power is drawn from the gem.
- Concentration Time: Activated a gem requires only one melee action, but the Stone Master
must continue to concentrate on the activated gems, causing a penalty of -2 to initiative and -2
to all defensive combat actions, such as dodge, parry, and auto-dodge, no matter how many gems
are activated.
- Power: Most gems have only power that can be drawn from them, but some have more then one
and unless otherwise mentioned, only one power can be drawn from a single gem at a time. At first
level, a Stone Master can draw power from only three gems simultaneously, but they can drawn
power from an additional gem at levels 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15. This means that they can have this
many gems active simultaneously, although gems that provide an instant result, such as deep red
rubies do not count towards this limit. In addition, all powers drawn from the gems using the
Stone Master's level of experience as the caster's level. See the section on
Gem Powers for more details on the powers that can be drawn from gems.
- P.P.E.: 5 to activate worthless stones like salt and sulfur, 10 to activate semiprecious
gems like quartz, agate, or amethyst, and 20 to activate a precious gem like zircon, ruby, or
emerald. The type of all gems is provided in Gem Powers section of this
document.
- Note: Only the Stone Master can use the magic from the stones, it cannot be Activated and
then transferred to others.
- Embed Gems
A new area of interest for Stone Masters is physically embedding gems into their bodies to gain
magical abilities. While painful and causing a decrease in the amount of PPE that the Stone Master has
available, the embedded gems provide Stone Masters with another weapon they they can use. The downside
of this ability is that the gems must be at least two carats large and some must be much larger in
order for them to be embedded into the Stone Master. This means that most gems that can be embedded are
quite expensive and often quite rare on Rifts Earth, especially in places that are not major trading
centers or are not near a site of naturally occurring gems.
- Range: The Stone Master must hold the gem against the part of their body where the gem will
be embedded. If an embedded gem is cut out of the Stone Master, then the Stone Master loses any
powers provided by the gem.
- Duration: Permanent until removed by the Stone Master or they are cut out of the Stone
Master's body.
- Limitation: A Stone master can embed up to two gems simultaneously, but they can remove gems
whenever they wish.
- Concentration Time: To embed the gems, the Stone Master must concentrate for 1D6 minutes.
- Power: Embedded gems provide power based on the type of gem and sometimes on the location of
the gem on the Stone Master's body. See the section on Embedded Gem for more
details.
- P.P.E.: 5 for each gem being embedded, but there is no cost to remove a gem from the Stone
Master's body.
- Penalty: Embedding a gem causes the Stone Master considerable pain and discomfort initially.
For 1D4 minutes following the procedure, the Stone Master suffers a penalty of -1 to all combat rolls
and -1 attack per melee.
- Note: A Stone Master cannot embed gems in other people.
Gem Powers
The first Stone Masters quickly learned how to not only manipulate rock, but draw powers from gems and other
precious stones. While this power was more limited then regular spell casting, it was also faster, and in
some cases, required less investment then casting a normal spell. Unfortunately, the early Stone Masters
developed a very crude and destructive method of extracting the powers from the gems, which often destroyed
the gems in only a few uses. Larger gems could withstand this process longer then smaller gems, but only to
a small extent. It was not until a new breed of Stone Masters was developed that this began to change. The
method of drawing powers from the gems was still destructive, but not as permanently and larger gems could
be activated many more times then before. In addition to this, Stone Masters learned how to draw powers from
new gems and more powers from current gems and some alien gems became available to the Atlanteans and they
were also added to the growing list of gems that could be used by the Stone Master. As this new breed of
Stone Masters becomes more common among true Atlanteans, the trade for such gems is growing at an incredible
rate.
When searching for and purchasing gems, there are two important characteristics that must be remembered. The
first is the carat of the gem, which represents its weight, and each carat (also spelt karat) is equal to
200 milligrams and is the standard for measuring precious stones and pearls on Rifts Earth prior to the
coming of the Rifts. While the carat standard was developed on Earth and is still used across the planet in
Human communities, most aliens has never heard of it before. The second most important characteristic of a
precious stone is its quality, which can greatly increase its price regardless of its carat value. For
example, with diamonds, the quality is measured by its cut and its clarity. Color is also an issue with some
gems, such as rare blue diamonds on Earth or less valuable yellow diamonds in a market that might specialize
in clear diamonds, but this is a cost modifier that varies from community to community. In most communities
on Rifts Earth, gems are rare enough that the color of a gem is rarely considered in its price. The quality
of each gems is abstracted to a simple scale that ranges from 0 to 10, with 0 being the value of a gem as it
is pulled from the ground, completely uncut, and 10 being an absolutely flawless, perfectly cut gem. Even
a small gem with a quality level of 10 is worth a considerable amount of money, even if its quality offers
the Stone Master with no magically benefit.
Below is a list of precious stones that the Stone Master can draw power from. Each entry provides the name
of the gem, whether the stone is considered worthless, like salt and sulfur, semiprecious, or precious,
the natural location on Earth where the gem can be located, the power that can be drawn from the gem, the
cost of the gem per carat, and a table for the quality level for that gem. Each entry in the quality level
table is a multiplier for the cost of a gem based on its carat value. For example, if a gem has a base cost
of 500 credits per carat and the Stone Master had a three carat gem of this type with a quality level of 3
and the multiplier at that level was x3, then the final price of the gem would be 4500 credits (3 carats *
500 per carat * 3 from quality level = 4500).

- Diamond
- Type: Precious
- Location: Found abundantly in South Africa, but can also be found in Brazil, Canada,
Venezuela, and to a lesser degree in the rest of Africa, parts of Colombia, Mongolia, Siberia
and the Urals (parts of Russia).
- Power: Fly as the Eagle and Invulnerability (as per the seventh level invocation
spells). The gem can also be used as a PPE battery that can be charged with up to 25 PPE per
carat, however, the gem can only be charged a total of two times per carat, although the energy
can be drawn from the gems any number of times as long as their is energy remaining. It takes
a Stone Master ten minutes to recharge a PPE battery, no matter how much PPE they place into it
and it counts against the number of recharges that the PPE batter can withstand, even if only
1 PPE is placed into the gem. Once the gem is used to store PPE energy, it cannot be used to draw
any other power that the gem might possess. The Stone Master does not need to activate a gem used
as a PPE battery, instead the PPE is always available to the Stone Master as long as the gem
could normally be activated.
- Note: Diamonds must be at least one carat to use the Invulnerability power or to be used
as a PPE battery.

Embedded Gems
A Stone Master can embed gems into ten points across his body. Each point can
only hold one gem at a time, and while some gems are only useful in one or
two points, others, such as Diamonds, are useful in nearly all points. Even
though each point can only hold a single gem, a gem type can be used in as
many points as the Stone Master wants. For example, although only one gem can
be placed on the Stone Master’s back, diamond gems could be placed on the
Stone Master’s back and forehead. The following locations are available for
a Stone Master to place gems: forehead, throat, back, chest, arm (2), palm
(2), and leg (2).
A gem placed on the Stone Master's forehead appears on a region near the
Stone Master's eyes, for humanoid creatures, that is directly above the eyes.
A gem placed on the Stone Master's throat must be located near the mouth of
the Stone Master, for humanoid creatures, this gem must be placed on the
front of the throat. A gem placed on the Stone Master's back must be placed
near a major muscle group, preferably away from internal organs, for a
humanoid creature, this area is usually the upper back. A gem placed on the
arm of a creature can be placed on a tentacle, but not on a leg, even if that
creature has no legs and creatures with multiple arms can embed a gem on each
one. A gem placed on the Stone Master's palms can be placed on a tentacle or
a tail as well, but only if it can be used for grasping. A gem placed on the
Stone Master's legs can also be placed on a tentacle, but only ones used for
motion. Under no circumstances can a single limb have more then one gem
embedded in it at any one time.
The section below contains the ten different body locations where gems can be
placed, and within each body location is listed the different gems that can
be placed there. Each gem entry contains the minimum size of the gem, the
minimum quality level, the amount of PPE that is permanently lost while the
gem remains embedded, any requirements that the gem has for its power to work
properly, and a description of the gem’s power once it is embedded into the
Stone Master’s body. It is important to note that the requirements are not
for a gem to be embedded into the Stone Master, any gem that can be embedded
into a body location can be embedded regardless of requirements. A gem will
not provide its power to the Stone Master unless its requirements are met,
although it will still cost the Stone Master PPE.
