Magic Items

(Version 1.01 - Last Modified: 10/04/2002)

Introduction

Throughout the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series, several magical items are seen and used. Some are used regularly, while others are not. The following is a description of some of the magic items as seen throughout the two series.

Bansho Fan

The Bansho Fan was owned by Master Roshi in the original Dragon Ball series. It was needed to put out the fire on Fire Mountain. Unfortunately, the fan could never be used because Master Roshi had used it as a place mat and accidentally spilt juice on it; Master Roshi threw out the fan soon after. The magical power of the fan is used by waving it. If waved once, the fan causes a light rain storm to appear; if waved twice, a monsoon will appear; and if waved three times next to a body of water at least the size of a small lake, a tidal wave will appear, coming in the direction of the fan.

Dragon Balls

The Dragon Balls are powerful artifacts that contain the essence of a dragon trapped inside seven magical balls. The size of the ball is determined when the Dragon Balls are formed and have no real effect on their abilities. When all seven Dragon Balls are placed within 10’ (3.1 m) of each other and the magic phrase is spoken, the dragon spirit that is trapped within them is released. When the dragon spirit is released, the sky around the dragon ball in a 10 mile (16.1 km) radius turns pitch black and the dragon balls glow brightly. Anyone near the summoned dragon can make a wish that the dragon is required to fulfill. All wishes must be within the power of the dragon to achieve. For example, a trapped dragon will not be able to destroy the universe, but it would be able to bring someone back from the dead using a resurrection spell. The exact number and scope of the wishes that the Dragon Balls can grant varies for each set of Dragon Balls and is determined when the Dragon Balls are created. For example, the Dragon Balls on Earth summoned the ancient dragon Shenron who granted a single wish, but when worded carefully, the dragon was forced to raise many people from the dead with a single wish. After the wishing is completed, the dragon will use its power to fulfill the wish, but it may take some time before it can finish. If fulfilling the wish would take longer than 3 months, the dragon considers it impossible to accomplish, and another wish may be made. After the wish is granted, the balls magically teleport to random locations over the planet they are currently on. Dragon Balls are created by Namek Shamans.

Flying Nimbus

Flying Nimbus was a very important magic item used by Goku and his two children, Gohan and Goten. Nimbus allows a rider of good or selfish alignment to fly at speeds up to Mach 2 (1490 mph / 2400 km/h), but anyone of evil alignment will by unable to touch or sit on the the magical cloud. The rider can control the cloud with his thoughts and the cloud will obey only the first person that touched it if there is more then one rider. When not in use, the cloud rests in a high orbit above the planet so that it can reach the person summoning it very quickly. Only people of good alignment can call Nimbus and they must be taught how by someone who already knows the secret. While flying Nimbus, the rider feels that they are travelling fast, but it feels more like a gallopping horse then a super-sonic jet. While the rider is still affected by the decrease in oxygen and the cold at higher altitudes, the Nimbus can stop and turn on a dime and the rider will never fall off and is magically prevented from being injured by sudden accelerations and decelerations.

Potara Earrings

These two earrings allow any two beings to perform the Ki Manipulation Technique of Fusion. Each being wears one earring on an opposite ear, and both of them must activate the earrings at the same time and the power of fusion will combine the two into a single being. All abilities and powers of the fused being are detailed under the description of the Fusion technique. The earrings can only be activated once per day, but the fusion is permanent for as long as at least one earring is worn.

Saibamen Jar

The Saibamen Jar is not a magic items per se, but it is still a very special item. A Saibamen Jar is about the size of small pill bottle and can hold up to 20 sphere-shaped Saibamen seeds. When planted into the ground, each seed will grow into a fully mature Saibaman demon. Each Saibamen will take 1D6+4 melees to fully grow, and after that time they will spring from the ground and will only obey the commands of the person that planted them. The Saibamen jars were common on the planet Vegita and throughout Frieza’s territory. A randomly found jar will likely have only 1D4+4 seeds left in it. The seeds can only be planted in soil that is able to support plantlife of any type.

Senzu Beans

People that eat a single senzu bean feel instantly restored and they regain all lost Hit Points, S.D.C., M.D.C., PPE, and ISP, all poisons and toxins are instantly cured, and all negative spells are instantly ended. Multiple beams can be consumed at once or within a short time span, but they will only restore health, not improve it. If only a fraction of a beam is consumed, then only that portion of energy is restored. For example, if a person consumes half of a Senzu Beam, they will be healed 50% of their maximum Hit Points, S.D.C., M.D.C., PPE, and ISP to their current level. No matter how much of the beam is consumed, it will always cure all poisons and toxins, both normal and magical and will cancel any negative spells affecting the eater. Consuming a full beam will give a bonus of +50% to save vs. coma / death for up to 12 hours after the consumption of the beam, but multiple beams will not add any additional bonuses to save vs. coma. Senzu Beans are grown by Korrin who lives at the top of an impossibly high tower and are only given out to proven heroes of good alignment, usually in a bag holding 1D6 beans.
