Statement of the Artist

I was born and raised in the western United States. In the expanses of the Intermountain West and Basin and Range, I began to see and understand the landscape and my position within it, and to formulate my sensibilities as a photographer. For me, these places bear a presence that describes a subtle poetry of space, and a sublime beauty of light.

Landscape for me is the complete description of place--the relationships of objects and events in the lay of the land, their presencing in space, and the relationship of all to horizon. With a description of place must also come a sense of place, a sense of meaning about place.

Metaphor in landscape is the presentation of meaning through the descriptions of a poetry of place, position, and space, and our sense of where we dwell within it. These descriptions mirror our continuing awareness, and inform us about where we are in our world and mind.

My work in photography is a meditation on place, and the realization of those ruminations in photography; I am interested in the moments when landscape can narrate a metaphor of mere presence.

May all sentient beings benefit.
