leave it to the krazy kids in
cupertino...of course i just had to have the tiger, the new os x, version 10.4
to be exact...but i'm taking my time with the install, and won't have anything
to say about that until tuesday at the soonest...been spending my computer time
the last few days in prep mode, as in spending lot's of time over at o'reilly's
macdevcenter, cleaning up my book , cloning it
over to my external drive , getting psyched up for the big installation
...the coolest bit will be when i get it onto the purple imac as well (i bought
a family pack) and set both machines up for multiple users...

site and put myself on the registry to stop the telephone solicitors in their
tracks...effective 31 days from now i should be safe for 3 years...

cleared out thousands of emails today,
most everything prior to 05, save a couple corresponders i may need another day
or two to delete (haven't started in on the im files...)...immediately purged my
bowels as well...but you didn't want to hear about that, did you?

okay...i'm feeling itchy for mobility
so i went and got a real cell phone again...more on cingular as
the months go by i'm sure...as for the phone itself...well...let's
bullet...
* it's synchs beautifully with the book ; all my contacts bluetoothed their way nicely, though it didn't import the groups...not that i really need them on the phone...and the calendar synched up two weeks in advance...limited but workable... * the ringtones are ultimately obnoxious, of course...do i really need a casio in my pocket? there are workarounds of course, and i quite easily programmed a minimal bass and horn piece to let me know you are calling. and a simple click to let me know you left a message (do i ever answer the damned thing?). * themes capability seems decent, though none of the included possibilities, aside from the simple generic "cingular" suit me. i've opted for the ms tubbieland theme for the time being, which, once i figure out how to edit out the ms logo i'll be happy with, and if i could figure how to get laa-laa and po to randomly come walking up the hillside from time to time i would be ecstatic about. a boobah theme could be equally thrilling...time will tell i suppose. * the camera i will let you judge for yourself, taken from a moving vehicle as the sun began to do the late in the day orange glowing ball thing...

squeezed through the eye test for my
iowa dl once again...that makes about four times since i quit wearing
glasses...worried for a bit there as i couldn't read the first screen at all,
and then the kind lady put up another screen that started out with the big
letters and worked down to the small ones...it's amazing how much easier it was
for me to work my way up to the more difficult task...and how with just a bit of
a relaxed squint...and a slight adjustment of my cheeks and my chin...another
example of one human helping another jump through the hoops of the
machine...
Posted at 09:33 AM Thu - February 5, 2004i listengot the macspeech product up and running
well then, it isn't doing everything I want it to do, for example, more capitalization than I would like, and I have to say 'comma' more than I would like, but I am doing a lot more speaking than typing, and that is very groovy. even if it does interpret groovy as memory and typing as tight end. this machine appears to be sucking my
attention...i think i'll turn it off for a while...there's split pea soup in the
slow cooker and a pile of papers to deal with, not to mention books to read and
tai chi to practice...
Posted at 07:53 PM Sat - January 10, 2004could you be my, would you be my nborit's pronounced like mister rogers would have
said it, it stands for "no boundaries or rules", and it's got me so excited i'm
up late late late letting you know about it!
according to the brains behind the thing "The code is like a pot of goo, and you simply have to say, 'Poof,' and whatever you want comes out of it." hmmm...what else are they saying? You are free from windows, pull-down menus, screens filled with icons that you don't understand, crazy results that seem to come from out of nowhere, strict protocols that often make no sense, and endless rules that you can never remember. well...sounds good so far... You type a single letter "p" (for pictures) and all the pictures you have on your hard drive can come to you. They can appear in many ways. Let's say they appear as a list of picture names. Within this list, start drawing an arrow shaft that intersects the name of each image that you want to include in your slideshow and in the order that you want them to appear...After drawing the arrow's shaft to intersect the desired pictures, you point the arrow to Blackspace. NBOR automatically recognizes both the arrow and the context in which it was drawn. Then when you left-click on the arrowhead of this arrow, the slideshow is immediately created. Just hit the Play switch to view it. you can do what? For instance, you can create a multi-channel audio mixing console and assign it to a red star in your Blackspace . Then you can link to a friend's Blackspace over the Internet. Once you're linked, you can draw a red star in your Blackspace, and this will immediately give your friend your console over the Internet. okay...there has to be a catch... On February 16, 2004, NBOR will debut for personal computers and pen tablets using Windows 2000 and XP. The Linux version will also be released during the end of the first quarter of 2004, followed by the version for Mac OSX and higher this Fall. ack! evil pc's get it first? grrrr. Posted at 01:33 AM Fri - December 5, 2003kept away by my own mental boxthe aftermath of receiving the
book
(originally posted wednesday november 19, at 8:01 pm) three days switching over to the book,
and then two days not being able to get this system to work on my new
machine...not registering [until randi pointed it out] that i can just work on
my old trusty 400mhz purple imac until i figger that bug out...woo hoo....so
much has happened in the past few days...probably just to settle with the dust
of time..i did however have a beautiful walk in the arb...the most beautiful
weather...60 degrees and a light breeze and this beautiful pale easter egg blue
skies and pink clouds...
my other new machine is a digital voice recorder which i finally got up and running tonight, capturing some ideas for a project which shall remain mysterious for the time being, except that it relates to roslindale and the mystery of existence... and i was able to make like the pope and take a wonderful shit in the woods. viva la french roast! cleared up enough to do the dirty deed. in a few days it will come winging my

eh?
yes, well then, i suppose the revolution has begun, yes? and even before the
obligatory trip to see what they came up with, which will inevitable play us as
bigger victims than we really are, trapped
in a machine we never made , i'm thinking of an early 20th century
tale by e.m. forster , who has probably had every large
piece of fiction he ever wrote (room with a view, passage to india, howards end,
maurice, where angels fear to tread) filmed in a merchant ivory sort of manner,
a short story called the
machine stops , which
is available on at least five different websights (there is a limit to how far i
will dig just to offer up a statistic), always in that sort of delicious irony
so missing from most other forms of
media
(when's the last time you read a
novel which included a chapter warning you about the dangers of literacy?) and
yet, there they are, sucking you further into the machine. my first acquaintance
with this beauty was a mid-eighties issue of whole earth
review which featured a beautiful drawing of a monkey with his had
stuck in a tv screen, refusing to let go of the tasty fruit it has it's hands
upon, even as the big bad hunter is creeping up upon it...let go the fruit and
run little guy...no way...so fancy that the latest ish of wer is right back
there, the dangers of runaway
technology...
aw shit...i'm going offline and listen to bill hicks ...
