news for now

channeled by gandhi , brought to my attention by breszny

"Every moment of your life is infinitely creative and the universe is endlessly bountiful. Just put forth a clear enough request, and everything your heart desires must come to you."

a new view of the news

what life isn't

lifted this from rob brezsny , who got it from steve salerno ...

In its most elementary sense, after all, newsworthiness is built on a foundation of anomaly -- the classic "man bites dog" paradigm. (A second newsroom aphorism: "Nobody writes about the planes that land.")

Though that sounds common-sensical enough, few of us pause to think about the upshot of such truisms. That is, what you see each day on television, read about in the newspaper or hear during those 22-minute segments in which all-news radio stations promise to deliver "your world" is not, in fact, your world. Rather, it is the negative image of your world. Put another way, the news provides you with a high-resolution snapshot of what life isn't.
...
My advice would be to defer worrying about whatever the TV shows are hyping until you begin seeing unending waves of good news. That's when you'll know that the world is indeed a mess. In the meantime, the worse the news, the better you should feel about life.

the pro pro

i'm so happy with the horoscopes that rob brezsny has bestowed upon me this week that i'm posting them up so i'll see them more often.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): This isn't always the case, Scorpio, but right
now you have a certain resemblance to that type of wild iris known as
blue-eyed grass. Its stem isn't hardy enough to hold up more than one
flower blossom at a time; before a new bloom sprouts, therefore, the old
one has to wither. Similarly, you can't and shouldn't try to work on more
than a single labor of love, at least for the next week. Devote all your
concentration and care to it, ignoring the other possibilities. And don't
worry: This narrowing of your focus is a good thing.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Good news, Capricorn. Right now your
financial prospects look almost as bright as those of the oil industry,
whose earnings grew 42 percent in the last three months of 2005. There
is a caveat, however. If, like the companies that sell gasoline, you attempt
to capitalize on bad news and profit at the expense of the collective well-
being, your money situation will suffer. To gather all of the good
economic fortune that's available, you've got to redouble your efforts to
maintain high levels of integrity.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Several of my friends have given names to
their cars, and I know many other people who have bestowed appellations
on their homes, their vacuum cleaners, their favorite trees, and their
genitals. In Norse mythology, the god Thor affectionately called his magic
golden hammer by the name Mjollnir. It so happens that this would be a
ripe time for you to experiment with this approach, Aquarius. I think you'll
find that as you name your home and car as well as every plant, toaster,
traffic light, crow, and cloud, that the whole world will become more alive
and friendly and helpful.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): "We are what we pretend to be," wrote
author Kurt Vonnegut, "so we must be careful about what we pretend to
be." This is excellent advice to keep at the forefront of your awareness
during the coming weeks, Pisces. Here's how I interpret his statement:
There's not necessarily anything wrong with playing a role if that role is in
alignment with your highest values. In fact, to make believe that you are
the person you want to be is an excellent strategy for actually becoming
the person you want to be.

the cleanest veggie

if you've got to go conventional...

Tip of the week: Produce with the lowest pesticide levels: asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet corn, kiwi, mangoes, onions, papaya, pineapples and sweet peas. Produce with the highest pesticide levels: apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries.

so if you've got to go conventional go with these guys: asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet corn, kiwi, mangoes, onions, papaya, pineapples and sweet peas.

and if you've got to have these guys: apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries...go organic! or better yet buy local and biodynamic ...

happy to know yua

sticks and stones...

WHAT IF EVERYTHING'S ALIVE

Yua is a term the Yupiit people of Alaska use for the spirit that inhabits all things, both animate and inanimate. A rock, for instance, has as much yua as a caribou, spruce tree, or human being, and therefore merits the same measure of compassion. If a Yupiit goes out for a hike and spies a chunk of wood lying on a frozen river bank, she might pick it up and put it in a new position, allowing its previously hidden side to get fresh air and sun. In this way, she would bestow a blessing on the wood's yua. (Source: Earl Shorris, "The Last Word," *Harper's,* August 2000)
