brazilian victory overshadowed by bickering journalists
save us from the flames! more email
correspondence regarding brazil.
this first from dave borden of drcnet,
in response to my letter posted
earlier:
Mr.
Faris:
Thanks for writing and sharing
your concerns. Do I guess correctly that your e-mail was prompted at least in
part by the Narco News article posted today? If not, my apologies. If so, you
should know that Al Giordano hates us, actually posted attacks on us for running
an article that corrected his incorrect Venezuela article last month. This
despite our having been instrumental in Narco News becoming known shortly after
their formation.
Unfortunately, what's
going on with RELARD is more than just whining and bickering. It is an
important organization, and if it splits apart or implodes, that will be a bad
thing for drug policy reform in Brazil and elsewhere. It is also an important
story when one of the luminaries of drug policy and harm reduction is accused of
corruption in his country's major media. If Mesquita has been exonerated -- and
all of us here will certainly be happy if that is indeed the case -- that will
also be an important story, especially if it is true that a newspaper with an
axe to grind trumped up the charges.
In
the meantime, I urge you not to rely on Narco News for accurate news reporting
or for rational perspectives on other organizations or activists. There is not
a single individual in our movement who loves to attack other people and fight
with them more than Al Giordano, and despite his having received a recent
matching grant, the list of people and organizations willing to work with him
has grown quite short.

and then my
reply:
dave,
i'll
investigate your side of the story a bit more...however, you haven't addressed
my central concern, that you downplay a victory with talk of dissent and
corruption...are these not two separate
stories?
so
then...you and al are pretty tied...you are both slinging it. and this, of
course, is what always happens to progressives, and it's why it isn't really
news to see that it is happening again, in brazil, in latin america, in the
united states, wherever. better to focus on creating a climate for victory than
downplaying a win with a story that would make rush limbaugh
smile...
