Zenker's Diverticulum Pictures
by Christopher Chang, MD • Last Modified 7/9/2007

These images were obtained from a study called a barium swallow (or esophagram). This is the only study needed to work-up a patient suspected of having a Zenker's Diverticulum.

Front View with Barium: One can easily appreciate the Zenker's Diverticulum pouch with fluid halfway filling the pouch. The patient's chin is seen at the top.

Side View with Barium: A side view showing the Zenker's Diverticulum.

Front View without Barium: This is what a Zenker's Diverticulum looks like without any barium. One can see a faint outline of the pouch.

Front View with Barium: An example of a bi-lobed Zenker's Diverticulum.

Front View with Barium: An example of a laterally displaced Zenker's Diverticulum variant called Killian-Jamieson's Diverticulum.
