TRICKS & TREATS


and so it begins.

Sooner or later, you knew it would happen.

There was no way, no how someone who loves reading and writing and thinking and opining as much as I could ever stay silent. It had to happen.

Oh, sure. I've written online before, long before it was cool and hip, before it was over-covered and over-hyped. I was blogging -- if not daily, at least monthly -- before it had a name. But if you're reading this, you know me. So you know that, once it had a name, once it became cool and hip and over-hyped, well, then I wanted no part of it. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot keyboard.

But. Well.

This fall, in a time of glorious football and vainglorious politics, with all sorts of opinions and broadsides and sheer, mind-numbing lunacy flooding the airwaves and highways and bi-ways (whatever they are), well, I cracked. Thanks to the attention and engagement of fifty current students (bravo, OralComm B & C) who helped me to remember that speaking out with honor and passion allow you to overcome any hype. And to the thoughtful writing of one former student (hola, Olga) who showed me that, when done right and righteously, this practice can deserve the hype. And to the relentless energy and wit and wisdom of one old friend (you're beautiful, UglyJim), who, after sixteen years of full affiliation and constant inspiration, teaches and inspires me still, and who, with two little emails this week, reminded me why this matters so much.

So here we are. Perhaps too soon, never too late, and with all apologies and admiration to Wilco, a blog is born. Or at least re-animated.

(It is Halloween, after all.)
