BIGGER. BADDER. DUMBER.

what's more is less than enough.

Yesterday's blast from the TWM past inspired one of our regular readers -- we'll call him Captain Z -- to email last night and offer a little intellectual explosive device for the undercarriages -- and the overcompensations -- of all those urban Hummer drivers:

The modern Hummer as a statement of manliness is particularly ironic when you consider that it's basically a commercial-friendly, more rollover-prone bastardization of a civilian-variant bastardization of an aging military vehicle that offers fuck-all in terms of protection from direct fire or other attacks. The Popemobile is safer than your average in-service HMMWV. Seriously. The H2 and H3 offer nothing that other SUVs don't already offer and cost way more. I really wish they'd just ban those things from the road.

It's difficult to argue with any of that -- all the more so because it's true -- or with his final aside:

It's too bad our troops in Iraq aren't tooling around in these.

Damn straight, Captain Z. But those things cost a hell of a lot of money. And when you're only spending $250 million per day on the War to End All Wars and Terrorist Attacks and Any Future Fear or Discomfort We May Ever Feel Back Here in the Homeland, it's awfully hard to justify that kind of expense just to protect the lives of the men and women you're asking to fight it.
