THE QUIET COUNTENANCE OF A TUESDAY MORNING
it gives me peace.
Here's another of life's lovely, simple
pleasures:
Watching your seven-year-old
son, in a room full of toys and video games, less than three feet from a
television he knows he may watch, sit quietly on a sofa and lose himself in the
glories of good language and great storytelling, re-reading to himself a novel
you first read to him only a few months ago. As his eyes bore through the page
and his mind soars through time and space, as he marvels at the miracles of
words and worlds vividly imagined, and as you marvel along with him, proud and
thankful and filled to bursting with both love and peace, the silence sounds
like a benediction.
