WHEN GEORGE ORWELL MET NEVIL SHUTE

on cnn.com.

From one of TWM's most intrepid and media-savvy readers comes this lovely little screen capture...

...and accompanying commentary:

In addition to the "We Suck" prank, which is certainly national news of pressing importance, I was fetched by the pure innocent indignation of the headline that screams "Caught on Tape: Vandals Smash Sandcastle." It is good to know the beach now has video surveillance. I suppose with the current rate for shoreline properties, a modest sandcastle must be valued at a quarter million minimum.

It is also good to know, I think, that one of the world's leading news organizations continues to carry the flags of hard news and in-depth coverage: a lottery jackpot, the naming of a storm that the Weather Channel web site has barely begun to cover, the crashing of a private jet, Big Brother's knowledge of beach shenanigans, and a kitten trapped in concrete (anyone know where Michael Vick was at the time?) are the five most profound and fascinating stories of the day, once they've dispensed with the morning's Political Gaydar report.

Of course, the editors at CNN are at least still ahead -- or is that behind? -- the curve set by their even more erudite and sophisticated readership, which has made Famed 'beer hunter' dies and Andy Dick groped, offended, urinated the two most popular stories of a media morning that turns the page on our calendars and may have closed the book on our dignities.
