JUST ANOTHER CASE OF MEDIA BIAS, EPISODE IIkarl rove? who's he?
This is fun. So much fun, in fact, that it
threatens to become a regular feature on TWM.
The last time I checked on the fairness and balance of online news sites, their headline links, and their ability to decide even as they report, the Terri Schiavo autopsy had just been released, and our friends at Fox News were doing their best to list the development as simply and quietly and unobtrusively as possible. (Which is, of course, both their right and their privilege; it's their site and their network, and they can spin or slant or even bury the news any way they want, no matter how much or how often or how loudly they claim they don't.) This afternoon at 1 pm, in the midst of a continually brewing and politically brouhaha-ing did-he-or-didn't-he story about the White House Deputy Chief-of-Staff's potentially loose lips and the possible sinking of CIA ships, the Fox folks were once again exercising that right, invoking that privilege, and belying that claim. Consider: On CNN.com, the third story under "More News" reads: Controversy swirls around Rove. On MSNBC.com, the second story under "In the News" reads: Bush says he won't talk about Rove role in leak. On ABC.com, the lead story under "Politics" reads: Bush Won't Comment on Rove During Probe. On CBSNews.com, the third of their top stories reads: Bush: No Comment on Rove. On FoxNews.com , the fourth story under "Latest Headlines" reads: Cooper's Testimony Could Shed Light on Leak Case. It is possible, I suppose, that they just didn't want to out Rove as the center of the controversy; you can't be too careful when naming names these days. Or perhaps they, like Scott McClellan, didn't feel it would be appropriate to speculate on someone's actions without first knowing all the facts. (You know, extending to Mr. Rove the same courtesy he has extended to, well, just about no one.) But in any case, all four sites were once again correct, accurate, factual. They told it exactly as it was. And exactly as their editors wanted it to be. No matter what they say. (A fair and balanced Update: as of 3:16pm, FoxNews.com has updated its front page to include Rove's name and even a photo, with a story box on the left margin that reads: Time To Tell? Writer tight-lipped on testimony, Cooper says he'll detail CIA conversations with Karl Rove in future Time issue. It's nice to see them acknowledge that he's part of the story.)
